Hey friends, the West Valley Film Series on the ASU West Valley campus will screen a film every month (except in December) and is open to the public. The series is described as "Provocative Films for Viewing and Discussion," and each film will be followed by a brief feedback time led by faculty members from New College. The first film that will be screened on Wed, Sept. 18 @ 7:00 pm is "Cinema Paradiso," a masterpiece from 1988, considered one of the greatest films of all time and one of the most romantic to celebrate film itself. Set in a small Sicilian town, this film centers on the friendship between a young boy and a projectionist who works at the local movie theatre. The film is in Italian with English subtitles and is rated PG.

Admission is free and will be shown on the ASU West Valley campus (4701 W. Thunderbird Road, parking in Lot 17) in CLCC Lecture Hall (far east side of the campus). More information (and a flyer) can be found at https://newcollege.asu.edu/artspacewest

Today and tomorrow (Wed & Thurs) are the last two days to view "Staging America: The Artistic Legacy of the Provincetown Players" in ArtSpace West. This exhibit allows you to see and hear the history of the Provincetown Players, the group that helped usher American theatre into the Modern era of the 20th century, as well as introduce the playwrights Eugene O'Neill and Susan Glaspell. ArtSpace West is open from 12n-5pm.

03/21/2023

"Staging America: The Artistic Legacy of the Provincetown Players" continues in ArtSpace West through Thursday, March 30th. The exhibit invites you to step into the world of the Players from their inception in Summer of 1915 in Provincetown on Cape Cod to their establishment as a company in Greenwich Village in the Fall of 1916. In the process, the Players ushered American theatre into the modern age. One feature is a short film that uses original photos from their productions of Eugene O'Neill's "The Emperor Jones" (photo here showing the original "Brutus Jones" Charles Gilpin) and "The Hairy Ape," both early examples of expressionism in American theatre. ArtSpace West is open Mondays-Thursdays from 12noon-5pm.

03/15/2023

A reminder that tonight is the opening of "Staging America: The Artistic Legacy of the Provincetown Players" in ArtSpace West from 7-9pm. This installation celebrates the work of the American theatre company the Provincetown Players and the release of IAP faculty Jeff Kennedy’s new book by the same title. The exhibit features historical photos, narrative, film, video, projections, interactive websites, and audio that display the story of the Players and how they ushered American theatre into the modern era. A special feature TONIGHT ONLY will be a staged reading of Susan Glaspell’s play, “Trifles,” featuring some of our finest local actors. This play continues to have its own legacy as one of the first feminist plays and as the most anthologized one-act in all of American theatre (This photo is of a performance in 1918, though our actors don't look quite so gray). The reception begins at 7:00 pm in ArtSpace West, and the performance will start around 7:30 pm. We hope you can attend.

03/13/2023

This Wednesday night, March 15, from 7-9 pm is the opening reception for a new installation in ArtSpace West: "Staging America: The Artistic Legacy of the Provincetown Players." Created by IAP faculty Jeff Kennedy, this installation uses historical photos, visual art, videos, interactive media, and sound to celebrate the legacy of the Players who from 1915-1922 were instrumental in ushering American theatre into the modern era with experimental plays written by American playwrights. Dr. Kennedy also has a new book that was just released with the same title as this installation. As a special event for the opening reception, five professional actors will be performing "Trifles" by Susan Glaspell, which was premiered by the Players and is considered one of America's first feminist plays (as well as the most anthologized one-act play in the American canon). We invite you to join us; food will be served, and the performance will begin around 7:30 pm. This installation will continue through March 30; ArtSpace West is open Mondays-Thursdays from 12 noon- 5:00 pm.

02/25/2023

Our next installation in ArtSpace West is "Staging America" from March 16-30. IAP faculty Jeffery Kennedy presents an historical installation of photos, ephemera, and videos that celebrate the artistic legacy of the Provincetown Players, the subject of his recently released book. This originally amateur theatre company changed American theatre beginning in 1915 by ushering it into the modern era in terms of its writing style and subject matter, and in the process introduced the world to playwrights that included Eugene O'Neill, Susan Glaspell, Edna St. Vincent Millay, John Reed, and Djuna Barnes. The opening reception on Wed, Mar 15 @ 7 p. m. will feature a staged reading of Glaspell's play "Trifles."

Our next installation in ArtSpace West opens this next week as our campus begins its month-long Black History Month celebration. "This is Too Much" is a juried exhibition from the visual arts students at South Mountain High School. This exhibit is a visual expression of what students have to say about the world they've inherited. It represents their frustration about this world and also how they want to forget about all of the chaos and celebrate the beauty and joy they experience. The opening reception for "This is Too Much" is this Wednesday night, February 1, from 7-9 pm (preceded by the opening of Black History Month ceremony at 6pm in Delph Courtyard), and the exhibit runs through February 23. ArtSpace West is open Mondays-Thursdays from 12 noon-5 pm.

The event is capped off with a recitation of King's "I Have a Dream" speech, performed by IAP faculty Charles St. Clair, and this year with help from Danta McGilvery from First Institutional Baptist in Phoenix. "Let Freedom Ring!"
