When we see folks who have running goals, many times over there is some imbalance between one side over the other. This may sound obvious, but running well takes two feet. If there is a compensation or imbalance our body is amazing to adjust and help the other foot or leg — but over time and with life or running demands that compensation has potential to lead to injury.

Janet is a go-getter. In her mid 70s, she travels regionally to hike, camp and get her fill of all that the upstate and Blue Ridge offers. About once a year she savors a good bike tour abroad — HOWEVER — this year she was plagued with a irritated shoulder which impacted her daily activities & limited her regional exploration (driving, setting up her camper awning & general lifting). With this type of limitation, traveling abroad solo brought on a whole other layer of concern!

Before her cycling tour this year, Janet saw one of our social media ads & reached out to our team.

One of her goals through experiencing her shoulder pain was to move into a regular workout routine — because she realized that maintaining her body as a single independent woman was a REQUIREMENT — of her own body.

The sn**ch is one of the most complex weight lifting movements and is considered one of the two main lifts of Olympic weightlifting.
In one single motion, the sn**ch combines both a pull (lower body) and a press (upper body). This whole body movement requires rapid power production and ideal mobility & stability.

Following rehabbing a significant knee injury while mountain biking, Eric reached out to us to regain his optimum mobility following the accident. Wait…HOLD it right there!

Isometric holds, there’s nothing quite like it! The burn — the surprise weakness you didn’t expect and the strength building you feel in real time!

Jody here was having significant shoulder pain when he first stopped in to see our team. He enjoys those hardy CrossFit workouts in his every day routine, but hitting “the box” with nagging unresolved shoulder pain was keeping him back from getting the PRs he was looking for AND impacted his sleep and recovery patterns.
An orthopedic surgeon even gave him a cortisone shot that didn’t touch the pain.

Fast forward — after seeing our team his shoulder is eliminated AND is 10 # away from his ideal push press weight of 200 #!!!

Have you heard of a Spanish squat?

In some cases, mobility limitations impact the movement and/or depth of a basic air squat (a squat without weight).

Why is a squat important at all? Well I’m glad you asked.

- [ ] Functional movement — the squat is a natural position that all humans need to utilize to move well — picking things up, squatting on the toilet, etc.
- [ ] Improve joint stability & posture — by taking your body through these movements you are adding lubricant to the hinges of your everyday movement & at rest!
- [ ] Improve balance — Staying in good form only added to balance as we age as well as increase bone density if applied in small doses of progressive overload.
- [ ] Builds muscle & flexibility -- Muscle growth adds on a myriad of levels to your metabolic rate, your stability & resilience.

BUT…not every one can perform a squat! So what do you do in this case? You know that squats benefit your body but you feel like you can’t get there…

There are options for everyone at their baseline. Our team meets them where they are at and guides them where they want to go. Here is a Spanish squat to build strength to get to the regular mobility of an air squat — but more quad heavy for knee stability.

**THIS is Ken's experience...**

I came to Movement Solutions with chronic shoulder discomfort that limited my physical activities from exercise to even simple work around the house.

I had already tried PT elsewhere, then seen an orthopaedist who ordered an MRI that showed a laundry list of rotator cuff, tendon, labrum, and joint problems that I was thankful didn't justify surgical repair. But even with continued PT, I basically hit a plateau far below where I wanted to be in strength and mobility.

Dr. Tim and Dr. Jeremiah at Movement Solutions have taken a very different approach and helped me regain full use of my arm / shoulder. A huge point for me is that every visit is a one-on-one session where I have the 100%, undivided attention of Dr. Tim or Dr. Jeremiah. The training is also more progressive and results-oriented with frequent re-evaluation where I can feel improvements in strength in multiple ranges of motion.

The best point about working with a smaller, private practice-when some home exercise really aggravated my shoulder, I reached out and they changed my appointment to get me back in the next day to carefully examine what I was feeling and work through the problem in order to keep my confidence and training moving forward.

Reaching out to Movement Solutions was almost a 'last shot', but I'm so thankful I did and very happy for the first time in several years to be able to engage in exercise and work without my shoulder holding me back.

Generational mobility training = how to set a good example for your family by being proactive rather than reactive
(+ beasting the younger generation in complex lifts)

Bruce walked into our practice a few years ago as he was dealing with some knee pain following a bike ride. He wanted to be able to overcome this, enjoy the annual family skiing trip & mountain bike freely. Folks, he was 64 at that time. Since then, he’s now checking in with us occasionally and is up to 53 # for his Turkish Get Up. His kids saw the strength gains and how he was now stronger in many way than they were! When they have nagging pain from living an active lifestyle (running, weight training, mountain biking, rock climbing) they know where to go! And they do!

Can we make a stretch here to say…”A family that rehabs together stays together”? ;) or could we call it “family therapy”?!

What’s your motivation?

A lot of people want to overcome pain.
BUT any many cases if that’s where the motivation stops, resolve doesn’t get very far.

BUT if the motivation is to do or become something beyond the pain…well that will take you MILES!

Tammy is an amazing testimony to this! She came in with pain — unable to get past it to get to her longer term mobility and fitness goals. The pain was frustrating and limiting but it didn’t keep her down. She worked closely with our team and transitioned into her own fitness journey following. We are so honored to know you and proud to work with you!

I would like to highly recommended Movement Solutions Physical Therapy Greenville! I so appreciated them for several reasons.

1) They were very professional in explaining the process, offering a plan, and guiding me through the sessions. Each of them - Tim, Jeremiah and Carrie - were all very kind and they created an enjoyable and peaceful atmosphere of healing.
2) I appreciated that they really listened to my description of my pain and sought to tailor the program to specifically address my physical issues.
3) I know that as a result of this physical therapy program that I am much stronger today and have much less pain. I have a plan on how to care for my body and I feel strong and confident to handle the physical challenges.
4) About four months after I started therapy, I did have a serious fall. However, I believe that because I was strong and healing well from my therapy, the fall was far less serious than what it could have been.

I am truly grateful for Movement Solutions and I know I will recommend them for others in the future.

It’s up to us to help one another flip the script and make the shift ⚡️

For many, pain in movement is their sole motivator. WHICH IS GREAT! Pain is a red flag to our body that something is wrong. However many times we talk to folks who ONLY want to alleviate the pain. Again, the motivation to reduce & relieve pain is a powerful mover — BUT if we as physical therapists leave you there — we aren’t fully helping you.

I have an active life that includes regular strength training. A couple of years ago, I began to experience a recurring cycle. After two or three weeks of consistent training, the muscles around my shoulder and neck would start to tighten or lock up. This not only necessitated recovery breaks but it was also affecting my sleep and overall quality of life.

Over that period, I relied on regular massage therapy and collected every recovery tool imaginable and had all but accepted that this was just the way it was going to be...until one of Movement Solutions' ads came through my social media feed. It seemed to describe my situation exactly, so I did one of the smartest things I have done in my adult life, and set up a consultation.

Within the first 30 minutes, we discovered that the issues were not originating in my shoulder, but my neck. A weak neck was causing a chain reaction that resulted in my shoulders overcompensating.

Within the first few days of doing the handful of daily mobility exercises, designed to strengthen my neck and train my shoulder to fire properly, I was able to sleep through the night again (I had become to used to the cycle that I wasn't even aware how much the pain was impacting my quality of sleep). And after just 12 weeks of support from Movement Solutions, I'm back to strength training several times a week pain and problem free.

Word on the street is that progress reports are coming out next week — so we are starting one early!

Take a gander at this photo. In a few weeks we are going to share an update on how Don, who came to see our team for back pain, is improving. Not only in a reduction or maybe even elimination of his back pain but improvement on his deadlift form AND weight.

In the meantime, please note that our office will be closed on Monday 5/29 in observance of Memorial Day. Normal hours resume on Tuesday 5/30. Thank you to all of those who have served and to those who currently serve our country!

My issues stem form degenerative discs in my lumbar region of my back. When I first started, I was having issues bending, standing up after I had been sitting for a while, walking long distances, and even doing basic yard and house work, just to name a few.

Since I've been going to Movement Solutions, I've gained more mobility and less pain, along with the knowledge to continue to get better. You get one on one attention during your appointment and it's explained to you how and why the exercises you are doing will benefit you. I am currently lifting weight that I would have never imagined lifting.
