Denim Day: April 24, 2024
WHY DENIM?
The Denim Day story begins in Italy in 1992, when an 18-year-old girl was r***d by her 45-year-old driving instructor that was taking her on her very first driving lesson. He forced her to pull over to an isolated road, pulled her out of the car, removed her jeans, and forcefully r***d her.
She reported the r**e, and the perpetrator was arrested and prosecuted. He was then convicted of r**e and sentenced to jail. Years later, he appealed the conviction claiming that they had consensual s*x. The Italian Supreme Court overturned the conviction, and the perpetrator was released. A statement from the Court argued that because the victim was wearing very tight jeans, she had to physically help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was not considered r**e, but consensual s*x. This became known throughout Italy as the “jeans alibi.”
However tight the jeans are or however the amount of clothing someone wears, this DOES NOT validate consent.
As the longest running s*xual violence prevention and education campaign in history, Denim Day asks everyone to participate in making a social impact with their fashion statement by wearing denim jeans on this day as a visible means of protest for the misconceptions that surround s*xual violence.
Please take the time to save the date and support the cause!
