We’re excited to welcome the 2024-2025 Junior League of Honolulu Board of Directors! The new Board was officially voted in at the May GMM, where we celebrated them with beautiful lei.
The topic of our May GMM and Annual Dinner is Reflections on the Past, Present and Future. During this meeting we will recognize our new active members and outgoing board, and celebrate our new leadership team.
Several sustainers will facilitate breakout sessions to build camaraderie and collect input to strengthen the foundation for the next league year and new leadership team.
Come out and join the group on our next hike – currently scheduled for Saturday, May 25 at 8:00 a.m. at Ka'ena Point on the North Shore. Known by early Hawaiians as a sacred place where souls would leap into the spirit world to join their ancestors, it promises to be a beautiful and peaceful opportunity to mark Memorial Day.
It's time for some summer reading! The next book club selections are “Night Watch” by Jayne Anne Phillips and “The Bullet” by Mary Louise Kelly. All are welcome to join the discussion and fellowship.
The Nominating Committee is pleased to announce the nominees for the Junior League of Honolulu’s 2024-2025 elected officers. Voting will take place at the May 22, 2024, General Membership Meeting.
The Laura N. Dowsett Award was created in 1982 to honor a Sustaining member who personified the ideals of the Junior League of Honolulu.
This annual award is presented to a Sustainer who demonstrates the spirit of voluntarism, the value of specialized training, the effectiveness of advocacy, and other qualities of leadership developed in the League.
We’ll have great conversation, soak in nature, and enjoy a morning outdoors - who could ask for more? We hope to see you at our hike of the Makiki Valley Loop Trail. Meet us at the Hawaii Nature Center.

In 2000, the Junior League of Honolulu developed HerStory to impact the lives of Hawaii’s women and advance women’s leadership. The conference tapped leaders in our community and nationally prominent guest speakers to give women of Honolulu a day to connect, rejuvenate and become inspired. Today, the conference is run by Hawaii Business Magazine and continues under the name Wahine Forum. Learn more here: https://www.juniorleagueofhonolulu.org/signature-projects
In the 1970s, national trends were dominated by health and welfare, which shaped the JLH's programs and soon led to the establishment of Hale Kipa, a shelter for runaway youth. The Hale Kipa project was the first of many that inspired our League's focus on advocacy and community impact. Today, Hale Kipa is still actively serving and supporting Hawaii's youth and their families. Learn more here: https://www.juniorleagueofhonolulu.org/about/our-history/1950-1989/
We will cover the training topic of Organizational Management during our March GMM. Organizational Management encompasses Organizational Planning, Finances, Risk Management, Human Resources, and Information Technology. While Junior Leagues are charitable nonprofit organizations, they also have business characteristics that must be managed in addition to program goals.
After the training, 2024-2025 open Board/Leadership positions, along with eligibility requirements will be presented.
In 1965, the JLH led the restoration efforts of Iolani Palace, raising $15K toward an extensive historical research project to ensure it was restored back to its regal glory. Even more, the League completed a documentary film called "Iolani Palace: Hawai‘i’s Past Today" donating copies of the film to the Library of Hawai’i and the Department of Education in support of its legacy. The first decades were transformative for the JLH, with projects ranging from making layettes for Japanese earthquake victims to building an award-winning nutrition program for kindergarteners to supporting the WWII effort. The JLH also leveraged film and entertainment to help inspire Hawaii’s children and communities with the creation of the Children’s Theater, an original film, and more.
