Serving Hawaii since 1959. Donate & shop to sustain our community through the power of work.

08/08/2024

Our hearts are with the people of Maui who are still hurting from the devastating wildfires that occurred one year ago. Our Goodwill Maui team recently reflected on their experiences as they came together to support their community.

We will continue to support the Maui community’s long-term recovery in ways that are consistent with our core mission: to uplift people through the power of work.

Mahalo to all of you who supported our efforts and continue to do so by donating money or your gently-used goods, shopping in our stores and believing in our cause. The work continues. Maui Strong!

For more about our Kokua For Maui Efforts, visit GoodwillHawaii.org/maui-relief.

Each year, Goodwill Hawaii helps thousands of locals to find success through our free job training and employment programs. One such example is Wilbert, who successfully made the transition from incarceration to a positive community contributor, which he attributes to the support of our programs and counselors.

During incarceration, Wilbert enrolled in our employment program for reintegrating individuals where he learned valuable job readiness skills, participated in mock interviews, received confidence-building and transitional training, and individualized career planning which helped him to land an entry level job, earning $17 an hour. Wilbert continued to receive individualized services and case management following his release. The financial assistance and coaching provided by Goodwill’s career navigators assisted him in achieving his goal of becoming a CDL truck driver. Now earning $25 an hour, Wilbert is proud of his success and grateful for the support.

“Goodwill has helped me regain my confidence in knowing I am not judged and am valued. The services I received throughout my journey added to my drive to be all that I can be!”

Our President and CEO Katy Chen recently had the opportunity to visit with David Choo, CEO of Goodwill Korea in Seoul.

Founded over 20 years ago in Busan, Korea, Goodwill Korea now has over 700 employees across 42 stores. 65% of Goodwill Korea’s workforce is disabled and they also prioritize hiring those facing severe social stigma, including the formerly incarcerated and North Korean refugees.

A notable difference between Goodwill Korea and Goodwill Hawaii stores is that a quarter of every store is devoted to food. Packaged snacks and frozen meats and seafood are popular items for sale.

We are proud to announce that our Goodwill Maui team recently won the 2024 Retail Merchants of Hawaii Ho‘okela Award for Retail Community Team of the Year! 🙌 The award was accepted by our Maui store manager Noelani, with members of her team and staff from our Maui Mission Office also in attendance.

The team was nominated for the role they played in supporting the community in the aftermath of the tragic wildfires. It was an organization wide effort – from our mission services teams distributing store vouchers to impacted Lahaina and Kula residents and offering disaster relief and employment services, to our retail team who assisted customers in stores to find the things they needed, and our support teams who worked behind the scenes to ensure that donations were being processed fast enough so that customers would have more options to choose from.

Even with team members that were both directly and indirectly affected by the wildfires, our Maui team rose above and went above and beyond their normal job responsibilities to help individuals and families in need. Congratulations! 💙

Happy ! At Goodwill Hawaii, being green is at the heart of our philosophy and something we practice all year long.

By recycling items through your donations and purchases, together, we are able to divert millions of pounds of unnecessary waste out of Hawaii’s landfills every year. With the revenue of sales in our stores, we can sustain our community through the creation of jobs and empower people with employment barriers to reach their full potential.

You can support our efforts by donating gently used items to any of our donation centers statewide or join us at Kokua Hawaii Foundation 3Rs Recycling Drive this Saturday, 4/27 at Waialua High and Intermediate School.

Mahalo to U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda and Congressman Ed Case for making time to meet with our President & CEO Katy Chen as part of the annual event hosted by Goodwill Industries International.

During their conversation, the group discussed the vital work of Goodwill Hawaii’s mission to create local jobs, as well as garnering support from the lawmakers to advance Goodwill’s policy agenda, which includes investments in America’s workers, changes to the workforce development system, the impact of tax policies on nonprofits, and Goodwill’s role in textile recycling.

We recently helped Anthony to level up in his career by obtaining his Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Goodwill Hawaii employment counselor Lori helped Anthony to enroll in CDL training, secure financial support to cover the costs and encouraged him to keep going when things got tough.

After obtaining his CDL, Anthony quickly landed a new job with higher pay and full benefits that allows him to provide for his family in Pohnpei and Hilo.

Students from Mililani High School’s AP Environmental Science class got to see first-hand how supports efforts to reduce waste while volunteering at our Mapunapuna Production Facility.

Major life changes can prove to be a difficult obstacle, but with Goodwill Hawaii’s employment program, Shanna was able to overcome a health scare and other personal setbacks to chart a successful path forward.

With the guidance and support of Goodwill Hawaii employment counselors, Shanna was able to pursue her passion for health and completed a CNA program at Leeward Community College.
