‘Victims to the ocean’: Battle over beachfront erosion rises again with monster surf 01/26/2023

Itʻs time to move away from the ocean! There are a number of bills that have already been introduced at the state level to support buyouts of critically vulnerable properties and strengthen statewide protection for our beaches.

‘Victims to the ocean’: Battle over beachfront erosion rises again with monster surf The big surf is once again eating away the sand on the beach, leaving residents on edge and lawmakers scrambling to find a fix.

North Shore property owner offers to take down concrete barrier poured on Sunset Beach 11/12/2022

Two big developments on illegal shoreline hardening on the North Shore:

1. An illegal seawall built by the OʻSheas 5 years ago will be removed and disposed of by December 31st, 2024. They will also be liable for a fine of $50,000, plus $2,500 in administrative fees. This is an important step in deterring future coastal homeowners from trying the same thing. Also, this house is now for sale....

2. Josh VanEmmerik (who poured concrete on the shoreline in October) was granted a 60 day extension by the city to remove the concrete barrier. This is disappointing, and it is even more frustrating that he asked for a permit to install temporary emergency shoreline protection measures. We hope this permit is denied, considering that he bought both properties within the last year and signed a sea level rise disclosure statement when purchasing the neighboring property in August 2022.

The community needs to continue to fight to protect our public beaches and shorelines.

North Shore property owner offers to take down concrete barrier poured on Sunset Beach But his attorneys also want permission to use another temporary erosion control measure.
