Exciting!!

It's official! Abigail Adams, First Lady, wife of President John Adams, and mother of President John Quincy Adams, is now an established DAR Patriot! Congratulations to our new Virginia Daughter, a direct descendent of this outstanding American woman!

Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters has been in the news lately for its historic preservation project - a Wisconsin State Society Daughters of the American Revolution historic property owned since 1939. As you would imagine, there is always a challenge to keep old buildings up and running. This one just had its 205th birthday! One of our fundraisers was to support an engraved brick for our Patriot Memorial Garden connecting DAR members who care for this property to the historic site. So far 351 bricks with Revolutionary War Patriot names (men and women, including some Native Americans) are installed and can be viewed. Next week we are scheduled to install Phase 3, adding 75 more Patriot names! So excited about this property and project - to support its operations and carry on our legacy. Two Revolutionary War patriots are buried just blocks away as a bonus! Visit our website to see the Patriot names (under plan your visit). We will be adding Patriot profiles as our next fundraiser so that any virtual visitor can see the contributions of these brave men and women to our country! By all means stop by and see it yourself!

I hope you are flying your flags especially proudly this morning! Flag Day commemorates the June 14, 1777, adoption of the Flag of the United States of America by the Second Continental Congress. Since then, communities across America (as seen in this 1939 WPA print from Elmhurst, Illinois) have been celebrating the Stars and Stripes on and around June 14. Please visit the Flag of the USA Community on the Daughters Online Community to see how our Flag of the USA Committee, led by National Chair Marria Blinn, encourages respect and celebration of our beautiful flag year-round.

Today is Women Veterans Recognition Day! Please join the Executive Officers in giving a special thank-you to all of our women veterans, especially our veteran Daughters. We are so grateful for your service not only today, but every day. The date June 12 was chosen for this annual commemoration to mark the 1948 signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. This year is the 76th anniversary of that signing for America’s military women, granting women a permanent place in our nation’s armed forces. On this special day designated to honor America’s military women, past and present, please celebrate with us by thanking all of these courageous women in your life!

On this week’s DAR Today Podcast we get to learn a little bit more about one of these veteran Daughters—our Reporter General, Junelle Mongno. Mrs. Mongno has been a DAR member for about 38 years and joined the Air Force at the end of college and served as a registered dietician. It is so much fun to hear about some of her formative years in Arkansas. As always, tune in to the podcast on your favorite streaming service or watch it on YouTube, and look for the next episode to drop Monday!

Please join me and the Executive Officers in remembering the bravery of the nearly 160,000 Allied troops who invaded Normandy 80 years ago today. As we go about our normal morning routines, it is hard to imagine the emotions these young men must have felt as they prepared to invade France to take it back from N**i control. We lost 4,414 Allied troops on D-Day alone, including 2,501 Americans. Their sacrifice changed the course of the war in Europe and the course of history. It is a blessing that a few of the heroes of D-Day are still with us today, and I look forward to learning about the many ways DAR chapters across the world are commemorating their courage.

Since 1949, the United States has celebrated Armed Forces Day on the third Saturday of May to express our appreciation to those who are in service to our country. President Harry S. Truman led efforts to establish a unified day of celebration of our servicemen and women. Today, please join the Executive Officers in thanking all of our nation’s active duty personnel and especially our fellow Daughters who are in the Armed Forces. Armed Forces Day is also a fitting day to announce the launch of the Serving the Nation community on the Daughters Online Community. This is a private space for active-duty, Guard, reserve and veteran Daughters to connect with one another. If you are among these Daughters, thank you for your service, and please visit https://community.dar.org/serving-the-nation to request to join this new DOC group.

Lou Conter, the last living survivor of the USS Arizona battleship that exploded and sank during the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, has died. He was 102.

The Arizona lost 1,177 sailors and Marines in the 1941 attack that launched the United States into World War II. The battleship’s dead account for nearly half of those killed in the attack.

Conter was a quartermaster, standing on the main deck of the Arizona as Japanese planes flew overhead at 7:55 a.m. on Dec. 7 that year. Sailors were just beginning to hoist colors or raise the flag when the assault began.
