PTSD Awareness Day is observed every year on June 27th. PTSD stands for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and is a condition that many veterans and non-veterans alike suffer. PTSD can occur when someone experiences or witnesses a traumatic event.

Those experiencing suicidal feelings or self-destructive urges should get help immediately. The Su***de Crisis Hotline (1-800-273-8255) has a specific resource for veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs offers a Veterans’ Crisis Hotline confidential chat resource.

Happy Birthday to The United States Army!

Flag Day is celebrated by Americans on June 14 each year and commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed a resolution defining the colors, configuration, and symbolism of the Stars And Stripes, AKA The American Flag. The text of this resolution as reported by the Department of Veterans Affairs official site includes the following:
“…that the flag of the United States shall be of thirteen stripes of alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white in a blue field, representing the new constellation.”

Women Veterans Day

Annually on June 12 the state of Wisconsin and the WDVA recognizes Women Veterans Day in honor of the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act on June 12, 1948. Women veterans make up 10% of the veteran population in Wisconsin and honoring their service, sacrifice, and dedication to this country is the pinnacle of this day.

American women have served in the military both formally and informally throughout the history of the U.S.

Get Treatment For PTSD

Those who experience symptoms of PTSD or PTSD-like issues should seek help immediately. Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities, private care providers, counselors, and therapists can all be helpful in establishing an initial care regimen or refer those suffering from PTSD to a qualified care provider.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has more information on help for PTSD on its’ official site including help finding a therapist.

On June 6, 1944, Allied soldiers bravely stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. The Normandy beaches were chosen because of the range of air cover, and it was the shortest distance from Great Britain. Five landing beaches were selected for the assault: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches.

As dawn broke, the largest armada ever assembled began its assault on the beaches of Normandy. By the end of the day, the Atlantic Wall, (which took the Germans years to build), had fallen and the invasion was a success.

The events of D-Day forged partnerships and reinforced trans-Atlantic bonds that remain strong today.

D-Day will be commemorated on Thursday, June 6, 2024, the 80th anniversary of D-Day also known as the Allied Invasion of Normandy.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. Thanks to President Harry S. Truman, it’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America.
