The Kent State College of Aeronautics and Engineering is home to many classes and majors at Kent State University, including two categories of accredited mechatronics majors, Mechatronics Engineering Technology and Mechatronics Engineering. Filling the Research Gap on Student Health and Wellbeing | LearningWell Magazine 03/20/2024

Karin Coifman, Ph.D., and John Gunstad, Ph.D., professors in the Department of Psychological Sciences have launched a research initiative that could improve the wellbeing of thousands of students. The new Student Life Study is the largest and most ambitious investigation into the health and wellbeing of college students ever conducted. It will collect a high-dimensional data set on a group of 10,000 students and follow them throughout their lifetimes, providing real-time data on student mental and physical health. Kent State University is proud to be the host site for the inaugural Innovation Day providing a forum for the Northeast Ohio Public Universities Research Alliance (NEO-PURA) institutions to accelerate collaborations between each other and with the regional innovation ecosystem.

Kent State Researcher Develops Hybrid Fuel Cell Battery/Capacitor | Kent State University 08/02/2022

Yanhai Du, Ph.D., professor in the Kent State College of Aeronautics and Engineering and PI at Kent State’s Fuel Cell Program, helped create the first hybrid fuel cell battery/capacitor for commercial unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Seven institutions make up the team for this project funded by the Ohio Federal Research Network. This technology could benefit the critical military, commercial, inspection, and emergency response sectors.

Liquid crystal research at Kent State has not only had local impact in northeast Ohio, but global impact as well. Matthew Crawford, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of History in the Kent State University College of Arts and Sciences, will work alongside
Kent State University Libraries and the Kent State University Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Institute on the Liquid Crystal Oral History Project. Crawford also received a grant from Ohio History Connection to help fund this project which will preserve the history of these innovations.

The major cytotoxic agent peroxynitrite is connected with pathological conditions and can contribute to cancer and cardiovascular disease. Farid Fouad, Ph.D., associate professor in the Kent State University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Kent State Columbiana County Campuses, received a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This grant will allow him to continue to expand his crucial research in this area. The grant is part of a subaward on a larger grant awarded to collaborators at Cleveland State University.

Fluid resuscitation, a critical care treatment, can lead to complications if not dosed correctly. Underdosing could be inefficient, while overdosing can lead to injuries and hypothermia. Hossein Mirinejad, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Kent State College of Aeronautics and Engineering, recognized this problem and plans to develop a systematic approach to precise dosing with support from a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant.

A compact, cable-driven robot could be the answer to limitations of current medical robots. Tao Shen, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Kent State College of Aeronautics and Engineering, was awarded a two-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a more effective surgical robot. This cable-driven serial robot could also have applications outside of medical settings.
