Low-income students are being left behind and with TRIO Upward Bound serving disadvantaged backgrounds it’s helping to provide academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary for educational access and retention.

It’s, Spotlight Thursday!

Shout out to our Warren G Harding High School students for participating in an Engagement Day at TriYounity LLC in Warren, Ohio. TriYounity is a mindfulness and wellness center that hosted our students for meditation classes, yoga, massage chairs, and mindfulness sessions. 🙌

We want to welcome our new Upward Bound Health Professions Graduate Assistant, TYANA DUKES.

She is a Kent State Upward Bound Health professions alumna & Ravenna High School graduate – Class of 2017. Additionally, Tyana is a graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelor’s of Science major in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS), and a minor in Nonprofit Studies. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in HDFS at Kent State.

Tyana states, “My goal is to assist in the holistic advancement of first-generation college students. I hope to help students develop skills and provide motivation to academic success. Upward Bound helped me in my academic success, and I hope to do the same with the next generation. Thank you for this opportunity, and I look forward to working with all of you!”

We want to welcome Khalil Looney to our team. He serves as the Academic Program Coordinator for Kent State University’s Upward Bound Math Science program. Khalil is a first-generation college student from Akron, Ohio. He graduated from Barberton High School in 2016 and was a member of the Kent State TRIO Upward Bound Math Science program. He completed his undergraduate coursework in Pan-African Studies and Applied Conflict Management at Kent State in May of 2020, during which time he participated in TRIO Student Support Services and the TRIO Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement program. Khalil will earn his Master’s degree in Cultural Foundations in Education from Kent State on December 18.

Khalil looks forward to leading our weekly Path to College sessions, coordinating engagement days and our annual Summer Institute, and assisting each student in their journey to college. He can be reached at [email protected] or [email protected].

What is TRIO?

TRIO is a set of federally-funded college opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree. Over 850,000 low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities — from sixth grade through college graduation — are served by more than 2,800 programs nationally. TRIO programs provide academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary for educational access and retention. TRIO programs provide direct support services for students, and relevant training for directors and staff.
