⭐️Have you noticed anything different recently?

We have some new faces at TRP that we are very excited for you all to meet! 😄

Allow us to introduce the newest members of our TRP team..

👋Meet Alexandra Demus, PT, DPT. She has joined our Lansing team after recently making the move all the way from Miami Beach where she had earned her DPT from The George Washington University. But don’t worry, she has loyalty to Michigan & is making waves in MSU territory as a Michigan Alum herself, Go Blue! She will be a wonderful fit in our clinics with her experience as a neuro clinical specialist, bringing new ideas & knowledge to the clinic. She is thrilled to join a team so dedicated to individuals with neurological conditions, saying, “The passion is so evident and contagious at TRP!”

👋Meet Sue Skrzypczak! Sue has joined us in Clinton Township where she has been the new friendly face at reception greeting you! She is excited to learn the ins & outs of working in the medical field all while getting to know the wonderful patients and fantastic coworkers that come through those doors. Sue will be a great addition to the team as her kindness and eagerness to assist is already appreciated by all!

👋Meet Jordyn Sebastian, SLP. She might be a familiar face to some as she was here in 2021 as an intern where she found her passion for working with individuals with neurological diagnoses! After receiving her B.S. and M.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from EMU, she eventually made her way back to us in Livonia. We are so excited to have Jordyn rejoin the team and bring some new energy & ideas into the clinic!

Welcome to The Recovery Project, everyone! We are so excited to have everyone join us & are excited to see each one of your flourish in your positions.

If you see these smiling faces around the clinic, make sure you say hi & give them a big, warm TRP welcome! ❤️

🩵Occupational therapists seem to do it all! 🩵

Their job is to help improve the overall quality of life for their patients, inside and out of the clinic. They strive to help each individual regain the level of independence that they deserve and desire.

That’s where activities of daily living come in!

Activities of daily living, or ADL’s, are routine & essential self-care tasks that help maintain an individual’s autonomy. OT’s perform task analysis to find challenges & deficits in the steps that collectively make up activities to see where accommodations/modifications can be made.

🧼👓ADL’s that your OT can help you gain more independence with are tasks such as: bathing - safely transferring in/out of the tub and utilizing adaptive shower tools and personal device care - maintaining & managing devices essential to the individual such as eye glasses/contacts, hearing aids or orthotics.

Creating individualized treatment plans to maximize independence & functionality is our OT’s bread & butter!

Come in to get evaled by our occupational therapists and get started on your personalized road to recovery today!

We have some bittersweet news to share at TRP! 🥺🫶

We are saying goodbye to two of our beloved employees as they embark on their respective new journeys! 👋

💜Alyssa was a phenomenal PTA at our Livonia clinic as well as provided amazing care for our RCR clients. She has made such an impact on the clinic, her clients and coworkers with her kind personality and the encouragement she had for everyone. You can always count on Alyssa to lend a helping hand or a listening ear whenever you need it. We have no doubt she is going to thrive in her new endeavors of home care and we wish her nothing but the best as she sets off on this new adventure!

💜Allison was our outstanding SLP who will be greatly missed by all she encountered, clients and coworkers alike. She has been a staple of our SLP department at TRP and to say her presence is going to be greatly missed is an understatement. She has brought so much enrichment to her client’s lives, providing individualized and meaningful care to her clients. You can always count on Allison, she’s a team player and provides knowledgeable insight & advice to those who need it. We wish her luck as she starts her new job & is able to soak up all the precious family time she can!

We are going to miss these two so much .❤️

Join us in celebrating Disability Pride Month, a time to recognize & honor the contributions, resilience and achievements of this diverse, disabled community. Utilizing platforms to spotlight inclusion and amplify those voices for change. 2024’s theme highlights equality, inclusion, accessibility, independence and community connection - beautifully wrapped into one sentence: “We want a life like yours”.

The design of the Disability Pride flag helps to acknowledge all areas of disabilities. The flag was carefully crafted with a deeper meaning behind each design decision. The different colored diagonal lines represent the sub-communities & how they cut through and overcome barriers they face in their daily lives. The placement of them next to each other shows the solidarity between all and a sense of community.

Disabilities are not inherently negative and should not be treated as such. As we celebrate and listen to the experiences of disabled people, we strive to evolve in the way society handles accessibility and inclusion.

Check out The Arc as a great resource for more information on how you can get involved! Their mission is to promote & protect the human rights of people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. ⁉️What is neuroplasticity?

🧠Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change by creating new connections & reorganizing pathways. This is a crucial concept when it comes to neurological rehabilitation because it means that those who have experienced a stroke or other injury to the brain, have hope that their brains can adapt, heal or rewire.

At TRP we utilize the principles of neuroplasticity every day for optimal recovery for our clients!
🔥The 10 Principles of neuroplasticity:

1️⃣Use it or lose it! - If we don’t practice a skill it often gets weaker
2️⃣Use it and IMPROVE it - Skills we practice get better
3️⃣Specificity - We need to practice exact tasks that you want to improve
4️⃣Repetition matters - Consistency is key!
5️⃣Intensity matters - Progressive challenges elicit positive growth
6️⃣Time matters - Earlier the better but improvement can occur at various times in recovery
7️⃣ Salience matters - Exercises must be meaningful to you to yield a lasting change
8️⃣Age matters - But not as much as you think! Improvement is possible at any age but younger brains can change faster
9️⃣Transference - Practicing one skill can improve another skill
🔟Interference - Neuroplastic changes from bad habits can interfere w/ adopting new habits

🚨EXCITING NEWS🚨

We are now offering a NEW, 2 week intensive program specifically for those living with Parkinson’s called POPP - Power Over Parkinson’s Program!

Exercise is a vital component to maintaining balance, mobility & ADL’s for those living with Parkinson’s. Research has shown that it can not only maintain & improve motor functions but also has an effect on non-motor PD symptoms such as depression, constipation and declined cognition.

The program will offer a comprehensive, multidiscipline schedule with PT, OT, SLP, training, wellness programming and education on topics related to Parkinson’s such as but not limited to:
✅Exercise intensity
✅Stress management
✅Neuroplasticity principles
✅Fall prevention

You can expect the schedule for the POP Program to be:
💥5 hours/day
💥3 days/week (Mon/Wed/Fri)
💥for 2 weeks.

The Parkinson’s Outcome Project has shown that those who start exercising earlier in their disease course for a minimum of 2.5 hours/week experience a slowed decline in quality of life compared to those who start later.

‼️So don’t wait a second longer! Follow the link to find out more on the POP Program & how to sign up:
https://therecoveryproject.net/power-over-parkinsons-program/

At this time, this will be offered exclusively at our Clinton Township location! 🤗

Shhhh.. 🤫
We have some exciting news to share with you soon about a NEW 2 week, intensive evidence-based program designed specifically for those living with Parkinson’s!

But first.. Let’s talk about what PD is.

Parkinson’s is a chronic & progressive neurodegenerative disease that impacts motor and non-motor functions. This is because of the gradual loss of brain cells that produce dopamine, a chemical released by the brain that is necessary for movement to occur. As dopamine reduces over time it can make movement more difficult & can have an effect on your mood and motivation.

As always, we want you to know that you are not alone in this journey after receiving your diagnosis. There are support systems & resources available to you at any stage of your diagnosis. Take power over Parkinson’s!

👀 Stay tuned later this week to learn more about our new PD Program & find out how you can join!

Check out our website at https://therecoveryproject.net/medical-programs/parkinsons-disease-rehabilitation/ to learn more about resources & treatment we offer for PD.

Our very own Marketing Rep & Wellness Class Instructor, Lindsay Vos, is hosting this 6th Annual Paddle Run 4 CureHHT. She herself is a 6 year stroke survivor! The goal of this FUNdraiser is to raise money & awareness to find a cure for HHT (Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu Syndrome), a hereditary disease that the Vos Family is far too familiar with.

HHT is an inherited disease that leads to malformed blood vessels in multiple organs of the body thus increasing the likelihood of AVM’s, symptoms of nosebleeds in childhood are typically early indicators of having HHT. HHT is more common than Cystic Fibrosis & Muscular Dystrophy, yet many individuals & even healthcare professionals are unaware of the diagnosis until it’s too late.

This event is in honor of Linsday’s dad, Captain Jim - an avid boater & kayaker who loved the city of Gibraltar, sunshine & ice cold beer. ☀️🤍

After a tough health battle, they received the dx of the rare disease a month prior to his passing in 2015 which then shed light on the complications with his treatments. This prompted his family to get tested which revealed that all 3 of his children and 4 siblings share this unfortunate disease. He bravely paved the way for their care to be appropriately managed & now there’s hopes to do the same for many others in the same position.

So let’s all join the race for the cure of HHT!

We are very sad to announce that we had to say goodbye this week to a wonderful TRP employee, Danielle Poole, as she gets ready for a new chapter with her family in Georgia! 🫶🏼

Danielle started with TRP in 2016 as our first official scheduler and was promoted to Lead Scheduler in 2018. She has been instrumental in developing the scheduler role at TRP.

Since Danielle started with the company, TRP has grown exponentially. Whenever we expanded or opened a new clinic, we could always rely on Danielle to figure out the wrinkles and get us on the right path.

Initially, Danielle scheduled for Livonia and Clinton Twp until Clinton needed its own scheduler. She later scheduled for Lansing until Lansing was on its feet, and was interim scheduler for RCR for a few months. Now she primarily schedules for the Clinton Twp clinic while juggling her Lead Scheduler responsibilities. She’s pretty much touched every clinic at TRP at one time or another!

Danielle provides top notch service to the patients she serves and demonstrates unwavering patience and compassion on each phone call. Within TRP, Danielle is the go-to for advice on any scheduling related question and is someone we all count on for successfully handling difficult situations and complex cases. Danielle has the leadership skills, intelligence, and a work ethic to succeed in whatever she sets her mind to.

Danielle, thank you so much for all that you have done for TRP and its patients. You will go on to do great things and be an incredible asset to your future employer. We will miss you dearly.

If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Danielle and even if you haven’t, please join us in wishing her the best of luck in all she does!

Good luck, Danielle! We will miss you. ❤️

Meet Bridget Veresan, PTA. Bridget is a familiar face to the Livonia clinic from her time here as a student last year! She has graduated from Baker as a PTA with an appreciation of the complexity & creativeness of treatments/cases that is seen at TRP. She recognizes the hard work & perseverance within patients and is excited to match their level of dedication!

Attention all CVA patients & therapists 🗣️

🗓️ Mark your calendars because on May 23rd we have an exciting educational event happening at The Recovery Project!

We have partnered with Vivistim System to provide the best care possible for CVA rehab with research-backed interventions. Vivistim is an FDA-approved device that is implanted just under the skin in a same-day, outpatient procedure. It works with the brain & body during the period of time post-stroke that progress may seem to slow down to make rehab therapy more effective.

❓How does it do that?
It uses vagus nerve stimulation paired with movements to strengthen brain connections needed to regain arm & hand function. Vivistim will deliver a gentle pulse to help the brain strengthen or create new neural pathways. How cool?!

This event will provide information about protocols, processes, recommendations & inclusions for the device. Please stop by anytime from 10am-3pm at our Livonia clinic to talk with Mark from Vivistim with any questions you may have!

Take your recovery into your own hands! We hope to see you there.
