Major Cold is the last solar term of the year. As we move to the end phase of winter, the Yin energy gets to the polar, which also initiates the Yang energy to grow. Tomorrow will be the Lunar New Year's eve, another Yin Yang transiting time. Purified and gentle water and wood energy will refresh the world.

Minor Cold (Xiao Han), the 23rd in 24 Solar Terms, falls on Jan 5, 2023, and marks the beginning of the coldest day of the year.
This term covers another time check mark, "The third nine-day," which refers to the 19th to 27th days after the Winter Solstice(Jan 7 to Jan 19 in 2023). These nine days are the most frozen time, so it's important to keep warm and prepare the body's Yang Qi raising during this period. It is the best time to do moxibustion in the year. Good for treating joint degeneration, various pain symptoms, allergic rhinitis, facial paralysis, asthma, gastrointestinal dysfunctions caused by cold and deficiency. Because doing moxa at this particular time always triples the effects, people also name it Heavenly Moxibustion. In TCM, this is the time to warm and replenish the kidney to revitalize the essence and gently invigorate Yang Qi raising. Winter activities such as jogging, skiing, and ice skating are great choices. For seniors, practice Taichi or Qi Gong until mild sweating is appropriate. Warm and easily digested food such as Eight Treasure Congee, Ginger & Dang Gui Lamb soup, hot red wine, and warm fruit tea should be added to the diet. Check out our Eight Treasure Congee recipe: https://www.tcmhealingcenter.com/post/lunar-new-year-counting-down-with-eight-treasure-congee-recipes

冬至 (dōng zhì)- Winter Solstice Festival 12/22/2022

D**gzhi Festival, D**gzhi, or D**g Zhi in Chinese, is a time-honored tradition that celebrates the Winter Solstice in China. It is the day with the shortest daytime and longest night in the Northern Hemisphere. Since then, the daylight hours have become longer, bringing people hope. So Chinese Winter Solstice Festival was once as important as the Chinese New Year. It is the time to eat tonifying food. Northern Chinese eat dumplings, and southern people commonly eat wontons or glutinous rice balls. People believe that by wrapping many nutritious ingredients in dumplings or rice balls, you are also wrapping up good luck for the following year. There are also traditional activities such as worshipping the Heaven and the ancestors. In traditional Chinese medicine, we suggest doing 15 mins of MOXA daily to warm and unblock channels and expel wind and dampness to prevent stiffness or pain in the joints and muscles. Also, by doing MOXA, we can strengthen the immune system to protect us from the flu and cold.

冬至 (dōng zhì)- Winter Solstice Festival In China there is the winter solstice festival celebrated to welcome winter. Watch to see what is done during this festival.

Major Snow (Chinese: 大雪), the 21st solar term of the year. The natural scenery is "hundreds of leagues ice-bound go; over thousands of leagues flies snow". A proverb about the snow says, "A timely snow promises a good harvest." Following animals' nature, this is the time to slow down and be ready to hibernate. Lamb is the most popular nourishing food for the major snow season because it's warm, promotes blood circulation, and provides protection against the cold. Together with multigrain congee, these are the best foods to restore energy for the following spring. If you live in a warm zone, the temperature is higher than in the ice-snow area. Still, it's cooler than most of the year, and evil wind will quickly attack the neck, shoulder, and joints, causing flu, respiratory illness, and joint pain. Putting on socks and wearing a scarf covering the neck will keep those cold and wind pathogens out of your body.

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Minor Snow, (Chinese: 小雪), the 20th solar term of the year. During Minor Snow, indoor heating begins to work, and people usually feel dryness. According to practices in traditional Chinese medicine, this accumulation of "inner heat and dryness" in one's body can cause problems, including ulcer breakouts, dry skin, dry cough, flu, and cardiovascular conditions. The solution is to drink more hot soup, such as cabbage and bean curd soup, radish soup, miso soup, pumpkin soup, and red bean soup to warm up internally and moist dryness. Spicy food and bitter flavor should be avoided at this time.

Shuangjiang (Frost's Descent): An Interlude between Autumn and Winter 10/23/2022

Shuang Jiang or The Frost's Descent is the 18th of 24 solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar. It is the last solar term of autumn and marks the transition from autumn to winter. It means that the winter is about to enter. Northern Hemisphere, the temperature difference between day and night is larger, the pathogenic cold and wind easily attaching the body. Thus, strengthen defensive qi and keep warm is the key to stay healthy. Moving to winter time it's also the transitioning time from descending qi and spirit inward and downward to the life gate to secure and store the essence for winter. Strengthen the bone, nourishing blood and body fluids is the main topic for this solar term. There are Shuang Jiang customs such as appreciating chrysanthemum flowers, eating persimmons, go hiking and catch the sights from high up in the mountains, take extra nourishment and so on.

Cold Dew (Chinese: 寒露), the 17th solar term of the year, begins this year on Oct 8 and ends on Oct 22. With the temperatures dropping, the season transition from late Autumn to Winter. Animals are getting ready for hibernation. Autumn crops will be ripe, and seeds will be collected for the following year. In TCM, late Autumn is the time for nourishing Yin (blood, body fluid, and essences, aka material bases) and restoring vitality. Also, due to the unpredictable temperature, cold/warm and dryness quickly attack the human body. For people usually running hot, cooling and nourishing food like duck, crab, and Asian pear are appropriate; And for people easily catching a cold, warm tonifying food like lamb, hawthorns, and Pomegranates will be ideal choices. Activities like hiking, chrysanthemum gardening can help disperse Lung Qi to prevent depression. A warm foot soaking before bed is always suggested starting this time to promote microcirculation, and guide floating fire back to the source.

We had the wonderful opportunity to interview Dr. Behzad Varamini and Hannah Varamini, the duo behind the world’s first food-based prenatal bars! We all know that true nourishment comes from real foods whose nutrients are formed alongside hundreds of cofactors and enzymes that work synergistically together for maximum absorption by the human body, not vitamin pills made with synthetic, isolated nutrients and artificial ingredients. Yet most of us rely on synthetic vitamins to supplement our diets. Dr. Behzad and Hannah Varamini explain why food based nutrition is safer and has superior absorption than vitamin supplements when it comes to nourishing women who are either pregnant, trying to conceive, or in their postpartum time period. Their Tend Prenatal food bars were painstakingly developed over 3 years, solely from foods, and vetted by MDs, PhDs, and RDs with specialized training in maternal and child health.
