Renata Simril, President and CEO of LA84 Foundation spoke to the Verb community today on the importance of youth sports: “Sport has the power to celebrate our common humanity, regardless of faith, religion, culture, beliefs, gender, or ability. Sport can bring us together, to meet one another across borders and boundaries, to learn to compete as friends, to respect and trust one another, even in opposition.”

Fr. Travis Russell, S.J. shared the following sad news in a schoolwide email this morning:

It is with a heavy heart that I write you. This morning I got word that Verbum Dei lost another giant, Ms. Yvonne Woods.

Ms. Woods was a larger-than-life figure. She worked at Verb for over 30 years, and after retiring she would often visit and bless the campus with her presence. It is funny what you remember about someone when they pass. I will always remember Yvonne’s warm hugs, which were accompanied by the smell of a wonderful, sweet fragrance, and her outfits. She had style! Yvonne loved the Verb and her “sons.” She was a mother at heart.

Today’s Mass will be offered for Ms. Woods.

Yvonne, may choirs of angels welcome you
and lead you to the bosom of Abraham;
and where Lazarus is poor no longer
may you find eternal rest.
