Mirman School
Mirman School is passionately committed to the education of highly gifted children. Mirman School opened its doors to educate highly gifted children in 1962.
Motivated by a deep love and concern for these children, Dr. and Mrs. Norman J. Mirman began the school with nine pioneering students in their West Los Angeles home. The atmosphere throughout the school still reflects this feeling of love and respect for the children on the part of the administration, faculty, and staff. Today, the school is nestled atop a winding stretch of Los Angeles' Mulhollan
The first assembly of the year always reminds us of the joy of community! The school congregated this morning to officially welcome in the new school year, together. The assembly concluded with an all-school sing-along-long of a Mirman favorite, “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars. A happy Friday, indeed!
The energy on campus was buzzing among reuniting friends and families. Students began the year with smiles on their faces as they met their teachers and classmates while Dr. Kheel welcomed families to the new school year. 2024-2025, here we come!
A tradition enjoyed by all at Mirman is our back-to-school ice cream social! Parents and students gathered together to socialize with teachers, faculty, and new classmates with a cool treat on the last day of summer break!
Today was a day for our eighth grade seniors to get to know each other and officially meet our Head of School Dr. Marina Kheel. They also had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with what to expect for the year ahead!
🎶 Summer lovin’, had us a blast. Summer lovin’, the teachers are back! 🎶 Teachers and faculty, both old and new, came together on the Mirman campus for a week of professional development, community building, and getting classrooms ready for our Mustangs! Special thanks to our Parent Service League (PSL) for hosting a Welcome Back Lunch where they served wood-fired pizza with a side of love! ❤️
Alumni Spotlight and must-have summer reading recommendations in one! We're thrilled to highlight our very own Jenny Marder '91, a senior writer for NASA, for her stellar achievement! Check out her latest book, "The Ultimate Kid's Guide to the Universe," packed with fun activities and mind-blowing facts for curious young minds, in addition to her first book, "The Ultimate Kid's Guide to the Weather."
Meet our new Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, Sanam Khamneipur Smith. A Mirman alum from the early 90’s, she is excited to be back at her alma mater.
Community is a big part of Mirman’s culture. With the magic of LA Lunch Lady and the Themed Events Committee, we came together to share a school-wide Harvest Lunch, a feast with flavors from around the globe, reflecting Mirman diaspora.
Happy Halloween from Mirman! Not a single pair of BOO jeans were in sight as students and teachers wore costumes to celebrate! Little witches paid attention in their SPELLing lessons while others played the saxaBONE in music. Luckily, it wasn’t all candy for the students! Like zombies, Mirman students need brain food for lunch!
Today during Assembly, the community celebrated the culmination of Unity Week and this year’s theme of “Ubuntu." Students, staffulty, and families demonstrated solidarity by wearing orange. This week, students across both divisions participated in Unity Week activities and discussions, including decorating orange rocks to be displayed across the campus as a reminder to the community. Unity Rocks!
We Are Mirman! Today was the first Dr. B’s breakfast of the year. Started by former Mirman educator Dr. Boolootian, our community comes together every Thursday, honoring his belief in the power of shared breakfast conversations.
“The duties of a teacher are neither few nor small, but they elevate the mind and give energy to the character.”-Dorothea Dix
🎵 The halls are alive, with the sound of students🎵 Welcome, Mustangs to the 2023-2024 school year! Judging by the energy of our faculty, families and students this morning, we are in for a wonderful year!
School’s out for summer! But that doesn’t mean the fun and learning stops! Camp Mirman was in full swing this week as students found themselves “Lost in Space.” They have been exploring this week’s theme in many ways, including learning about the phases of the moon using Oreos…dispelling any rumors that the moon is made of cheese!
We closed out the 2022-2023 school year with Field Day! While our Upper School students enjoyed a day out at local amusement parks, our Lower School students spent the morning in friendly competition. The theme for this year was “We Over Me for 60,” a nod to our unofficial motto of Ubuntu. Each team represented each of our core values and a special team for Ubuntu. They played games such as musical chairs, relay races, dodge ball and running the Mustang Mile. The entire school was then treated to lunch from the Habit, agua fresca and popsicles. Finally, the day (and year) concluded with a volleyball game between the US4 Seniors and faculty! Have a great summer!
Our fourth grade class was celebrated at Mirman’s Stepping Up ceremony. As the “seniors of Lower School,” the class will come back in the fall as Upper School students! The ceremony concluded with the fourth graders passing their badges with a personalized note to the current third grade class.
Our first grade students worked on a design thinking project in GEMS (Girls/Guys Engaged in Math Studies) where they worked in small groups to construct boats that could hold as much weight as possible. They applied mathematical concepts such a surface area, capacity and geometric nets to their cardboard creations. One of the boats held 33 pounds!
Under the instruction of science teachers Ms. Merrill and Mr. Zary, our third graders had the opportunity to dissect a squid today. They were walked through the process, including removing the pen, an internalized shell that protects the organs. Afterwards, students were encouraged to write their names on postcards by dipping the pen or a toothpick into the ink sac.
The students in Mr. Lueder’s US3 Technology class, Design, Compute, Build, visited neighboring school to test the Underwater Remote Operated Vehicles they built over second semester.
Macte to all our Latin students! 57 of our students participated in the National Latin Exam that tests students on Latin grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, Greco-Roman mythology, Roman history and geography. 41 received awards: five cm laude, eight magna cm laude, nine silver maxima cm laude and 19 gold summa cm laude. Five of our students earned 💯 on their exam, awarding them each a “perfect paper award.” Go Mustangs!

We hosted our High School Graduates Reception where alumni toured the campus, met with their former teachers and played their favorite grade school games including Dynamite. Welcome home, Alumni! We’re so proud of you!
We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Kate Bonnici, a Mirman parent and accomplished poet and professor of literature and law. She spent time with our third grade students, sharing her love of poetry and leading a workshop where students had the opportunity to explore their creativity and write their own poems.
On our Lower School Innovation classes, students paired up to color code and design paths for their Ozobots. They also created glasses for their partners with 3D printing techniques after taking into consideration the customer’s demands and measurements.
Summer break conjures memories of family, vacations and fun following a long school year. It is also an excellent opportunity to continue nurturing the unique gifts and talents of our children. Join Parents Supporting Parents (PSP) and Dr. Byron McClure for our 2022-2023 close-out event. Attendees will leave with practical tools to empower and affirm our highly gifted learners.
Our fifth graders met our friends at Lokrantz Special Education Center for a playdate at Aiden’s Place, an accessible playground in Westwood. STEAM Coordinator, Mr. Huynh emphasized the importance of in design thinking.
The morning was full of joy as students led their families through their classes at our Family Open House.
