This is a strange time. From the pandemic to the economy to the strikes to the horrific world events to a (scary) election year… it’s a lot.

We cannot dismiss any of that. The pain we have all felt over the past years is 100% valid.

And also, it is our jobs as artists to be leaders in empathy and creativity. It is our job to be openhearted, vulnerable, and connected; to cultivate and share hope, and especially when it feels like there is none. It is our job to reflect humanity to make people feel their own.

And, yes, that takes work.

But dare we say it…

That work is also really f #%king fun.

It brings us together. It sets our souls on fire. It brings us joy and laughter and allows us to share joy and laughter with others

Don’t believe the lie that fun is frivolous. It’s actually really important. There is power in fun. Fun changes lives and communities. Fun makes our world a better place. Fun keeps us going, keeps us afloat when things are hard.

And even in the most dramatic, gut-wrenching scenes, we are reveling in that fun at the Studio. Yes, even sharing our pain with others- dynamically and generously- is fun.

And it may not feel like it, but the Industry is finding that fun again as well. Projects are being greenlit, movement is happening- our actors are living it.

Yes, it’s slow. But things are still *slowly* happening.

That being said, we understand how it feels hopeless… When you have less opportunities, it’s easier to spiral in lack and isolate. Every audition you DO get becomes so precious. And the ups and downs make you start questioning if you can even call yourself an actor anymore.

But we want to remind you that anything truly great has a slow season.

And sometimes that season in 4 years long. Take a look at the Olympics. These athletes wait 4 years for the OPPORTUNITY to go for gold. Yes, they take downtime within those 4 years- prioritizing self-care and mindset is essential. Simone The GOAT Biles has proven that how necessary and transformative that work is.

But we guarantee no Olympian is waiting around for when things get busy again at the next Olympics.

And the tough love here is that if you want to make a career out of this magical craft that sets your soul on fire, you have to be in a practice. So it’s often the slow season, when no one is looking and when the cameras aren’t rolling, that you want to make the most out of that practice.

So yeah, you may only have one audition here and there. But guess what? It only takes ONE. Give yourself the leg up to take that one opportunity seriously. Because when it comes, it will be when you least expect it. You want to be ready. And it could be the one that changes everything.

Don’t lose hope on yourself. We love you ♥️ and we'll meet you in your Olympic practice in class.

Choose to let your creativity loose. Choose to be an actor.

Yeah, over the past few years we’ve seen self-tape level the playing field for actors everywhere. But not being in the room with the actual decision makers can be frustrating. What do they want? And how can you give them what they want when you can’t ask them?

REFRAME: Part of the beauty of self-tapes is that they always require your own specific personal version, your own unique POV. You taking leadership, ownership. You have to fill in the blanks yourself. You can’t let the lack of direction leave you lost or rudderless. You have to trust your gut and direct yourself.

Not sure of the tone of the show because it’s not on the air and you can’t ask anyone in the room?
➡️ Leadership means trusting your own instincts and deciding what the tone is for you. Not even sure if you’re the killer in the episode of that procedural drama because the sides don’t tell you and you can’t ask anyone in the room?
➡️ Leadership means deciding for yourself, making the choice, even if it ends up being wrong. You can waste time trying to figure out what’s inside the mind of a showrunner you’ve never met (and P.S. she’s not exactly sure what the scene should look like either) or you can take command, make your own choices that are of your artistic instincts, and show her what the scene can be.

Like it or not, leadership is the only way. “This is where I’m coming from.” “This is how I’d do it if you hire me.”

The Industry is not suddenly going to change to give you all the information you need to feel comfortable making choices. ✨ But the Industry will always favor leaders ✨
