This morning, we kicked off the school year with over 400 parents at our Annual Parent Welcome Breakfast. It was a wonderful morning filled with community and connection. Estee Copans, our MPA president, shared heartfelt words about the special bond we share within the Milken community.
Head of School, Dr. Sarah Shulkind spoke about fostering "gibush," the Hebrew word for bonding, and how, amidst a world that can sometimes feel chaotic, our campus serves as a sanctuary for building community. She also highlighted our new cell phone-free policy, which provides the boundaries our students need to be fully present and deepen their connections.
Thank you to all who joined us and to the MPA for planning and volunteering —here's to a year of growth, bonding, and being truly present!

Welcome back! What an amazing first two days of school! Our Milken community hit the ground running, filled with energy, connection, and meaningful experiences.
Students jumped into the year with activities that brought us closer together—whether it was icebreakers with advisors, learning our new schedule, exploring campus, making new friends, and more! Some of our students ventured out for a service learning beach clean-up at Bruce's Beach and others spent time bonding in the sun at Balboa Park or connecting with their peers through team-building activities at Milken East.
These past two days were all about coming together as a community, living our core values, and creating a foundation for an incredible year ahead. Here’s to a year of growth, learning, and Kehillah!

It was incredible to see over 500 Milken community members come together this past Sunday afternoon to embody our core value of Ahavat Yisrael, connecting to Israel and the Jewish people. Joined by Scooter Braun, Milken’s Board Chair Richard Sandler, Milken’s Head of School Dr. Sarah Shulkind, Danielle Gelbaum (Nova Survivor), and alumna Arielle Mokhtarzadeh ‘14, our community stood united as we bore witness to the horrific events of October 7, 2023. We also stood together with Israelis and Jews all over the world in hope and a commitment to remain strong and dedicated to our communities near and far.
We are deeply grateful for our partnership with the Nova Exhibition who partnered with Milken for this exclusive event on their opening weekend. If you couldn’t attend, we encourage you to visit the exhibit while it’s still on display.
Enjoying a shawarma lunch on their last day of summer school, our Israel and the Middle East students celebrate nearly three weeks of deep dives into the history of Israel and its role in the Middle East with Dr. Dooley. From the early Zionist movement to the workings of the Knesset and current conflicts, they’ve engaged with current events and explored competing narratives.

Throwback to an incredible year in Milken's music program! Thanks to the Avi Efraim Gesundheit Music Fund, we welcomed two talented music coaches to work with our beginning and concert orchestra students. Their one-on-one sessions helped students master their instruments and progress at their own pace.
Danica Pinner, a professional cellist with a diverse musical career, brought her expertise from performing with prestigious composers like John Williams and artists such as the Jonas Brothers and Avril Lavigne.
Chris Rolontz, a versatile bassist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter known for his work on Pawn Shop Chronicles and Chef’s Table, shared his dynamic skills with our students.
Thank you to everyone who made this enriching experience possible. Our students' musical journeys have been profoundly impacted by your support.
We want to share this touching moment with our community: brave soldiers reading and enjoying letters written by Milken students. It is heartening to see the real impact of our students' efforts! A special thanks to Mora Shemesh and her family for making this possible. We always think of the courageous IDF soldiers and are grateful they received these letters. We hope they brought a bit of light to such challenging times.
to an amazing day with the Middle School's Garden Initiative and ! Together, they harvested fresh herbs and veggies and learned how to care for their tower gardens. From wiping down the plants to checking for yellow leaves and bugs, it was a fantastic hands-on experience! 🌱🐛🌿

In the wake of October 7th and amidst rising antisemitism, our community came together at the Skirball Cultural Center this past school year for an important discussion on understanding antisemitism and strengthening Israel advocacy.
We were honored to hear from distinguished experts and Milken community members, including alumni parents Dr. Michael Berenbaum and Dr. Mayim Bialik, as well as current parent Rabbi Noah Farkas. Their insights were invaluable as we navigated and continue to navigate this complex landscape together.
Moderated by our Head of School, Dr. Sarah Shulkind, the event provided a space for our community to come together, learn, and support one another.
Thank you to everyone who made this event possible.
