The Good Dog Gang
We’re 2 sisters rescuing as many pregnant dogs as we can
We acknowledge our community’s concern in regards to the misinformation and false accusations towards The Good Dog Gang, Heather Rothwell, and Sarah Rothwell.
Here are the facts:
These 12 puppies came from deplorable conditions with a history of medical issues, parvovirus, and increasing levels of abnormally aggressive behaviors. After consulting with certified professionals, we made the heartbreaking decision to surrender them to the Lubbock Animal Shelter for behavioral euthanasia. While legal liability can be transferred, our moral and ethical obligations can not.
Tommy Calk, the December 2022 Employee of the Month for Lubbock Animal Services, was not involved in the behavioral euthanasia.
For clarification, Lubbock Animal Services has approved the adoption, foster placement, and transfer of 219 dogs to our care.
The Good Dog Gang has rescued 1,421 dogs over the last 16 months and less than 1% were humanely euthanized due to the severity of their behavioral issues. These decisions are always heart-wrenching.
As of April 22, 2023, we have paid $127,195.37 for veterinary care at 3 local clinics. Every cent that has come in has gone back out to directly benefit our dogs. The donations we receive are spent on medical care, food, transports, and other necessary supplies.
Our mission has always been to transport dogs out of state. We have transferred 563 dogs, including 15 this past week, to Colorado Puppy Rescue in Aurora, CO. The director has been unavailable for comment regarding our working relationship.
The Good Dog Gang was officially formed as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Texas on July 17, 2022. We are in the process of obtaining our 501(c)3 tax-exempt status. Per www.irs.gov “Organizations required to apply for recognition of exemption must notify the Service within 27 months from the date of their formation to be treated as described in section 501(c)(3) from the date formed.”
On March 21, 2023, Mayor Payne and the City Council of Lubbock recognized our outstanding work to “ensure the safety, health, and well-being of pregnant dogs and puppies” in our community.
Criticism will not deter us from our mission to rescue dogs in Lubbock and the surrounding communities.
To all of our haters, instead of continuing this smear campaign, please redirect your energy and passion for animals towards supporting a local rescue or shelter by volunteering, donating, fostering or adopting today.
Sweet Daisy charmed everyone at the vet’s office for her health certificate appt 💜
Safe and secured!!
More puppies received the all-clear for Colorado! Theo (far right) is a parvo survivor, and they’re all slowly learning to trust humans.
Today we had to make a very difficult, unpopular decision. The 12 puppies from the hoarding case in Odessa were all showing extreme aggression, towards each other, other puppies, and adult dogs.
We consulted 2 of the trainers we work closely with and a certified canine behavior consultant. All 3 agreed this was not normal behavior. We discussed our options, and decided the only responsible decision was to euthanize them.
We couldn’t, in good conscience, place these dogs with foster families with dogs of their own & children. It is impossible to find enough fosters for healthy, well-adjusted dogs, much less fosters for puppies that would require months of individual rehabilitation, with no guarantee of success. We did talk about them going to other rescues, but decided we couldn’t just make it someone else’s problem. At the end of the day, they were our responsibility, and we took on the heavy burden of making the only choice we could live with.
We have been cussed, bashed, and threatened by some of the other people involved. “I will tear you to shreds and everyone I know which is quite alot will find out.” “You guys are fu***ng idiots. You don’t know me but you are going to regret this. I will spend the rest of my life making sure. EVERY bad thing that happens to you, you are going to think “is this because I killed 12 puppies?””
We fully expect them to bash us all over social media. But we stand behind our decision.
As the behaviorist said “When there are thousands of nice puppies being euthanized already, saving the aggressive ones doesn't make as much sense. As hard as it is to make that decision.”
ETA-we will not be responding to any comments. Those that support us, we appreciate you. Those that don’t, we still stand behind our decision.
