Three Rhodes students started The Bridge to raise awareness around issues of homelessness while providing a sustainable source of income to currently and formerly homeless individuals. Four years later, it's still going strong.
Community Alliance for the Homeless
Congratulations to our neighbors in the east! Chattanooga has effectively ended veteran homelessness. They have marshaled the necessary resources to provide housing in 30 days or less for any veteran who becomes homeless. If they can do it, then why can't we? We can! Let's do it!

Community Alliance for the Homeless
THE BRIDGE NEWSPAPER
Street newspapers play a vital role in the fight to end homelessness. In the late 1980's, modern street newspapers emerged as a tool which was used by homeless advocates to provide an alternate depiction of individuals experiencing homelessness due to the way that they were inaccurately portrayed by existing media. Typically, it was believed that these individuals were nothing more than beggars, criminals, and drug users whose homeless status was merely the result of laziness. The growing publication of street newspapers across the United States has played a pivotal role in changing the community's attitude and its response to homelessness.
Did you know that Memphis has a street newspaper as well? Founded in March of 2013 by students of Rhodes College, The Bridge aims to bridge the gap between individuals who are experiencing homelessness and those of us who are sheltered by focusing on local, national, and global news surrounding poverty and homelessness. The individuals who sell The Bridge do so for $1, and they keep 100% of their profits while increasing community engagement and awareness of issues surrounding homelessness in Memphis/Shelby County.
We were honored to have Emily Faber of The Bridge as a volunteer for the 2017 Point-in-Time count. She shared information with us regarding the publication, its history, and how Memphians can support this effort. Distribution is every Thursday from 2:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Church, 700 Poplar Avenue. At distribution, people can become vendors, buy newspapers, receive incentives, and submit articles for the paper. Vendors are primarily individuals who are experiencing homelessness. To date, vendors of The Bridge have made over $186.500 in paper sales. At least 20% of the homeless population of Memphis has benefitted from this opportunity. In addition to receiving 100% of their profits, vendors are eligible for other incentives such as all day bus passes. As with street newspapers across the United States, The Bridge gives individuals who are experiencing homelessness an employment opportunity and a voice in the community.
