Why are you running the ?

“I set a goal for myself to run a marathon before turning 26. After running multiple 5ks, 10ks, and 5 half marathons, at 25, I decided to sign up and train for the Lakefront Marathon. I grew up in Milwaukee, so I couldn’t imagine a more perfect place to run my first marathon. Running has been such an important part of my life because it has shown me that I can do anything I put my mind to, and so I can’t wait to show what I’m capable of on October 6!”

Why are you running the ?

“My name is Kevin - and I'm a recovering alcoholic. I was never an athlete. I partied - and I partied hard. I grew up in Wisconsin and attended college in Milwaukee, which was followed by several years of spiraling downward into functional alcoholism and addiction on the streets of Milwaukee. Four years ago, I was released from jail after receiving yet another OWI charge. I made the commitment right then and there as I stood at that crossroads, that this time absolutely must be different, otherwise I WILL end up dead. My family and friends (and the law) were certain of this...

Fast forward 4 years. I now live in Michigan. Through the grace of God and the 12- steps, I'm off probation and now have 6 years sober (2 of those in jail). I'm surrounded by loving and supportive family and have found an incredibly supportive wife here. I've taken up running and it has not only changed my life, it has helped save it. That is no exaggeration. I've run 5 marathons in the last 4 years with plans for Milwaukee this Fall. I work in a run specialty store and regularly participate in and organize community runs in Grand Rapids. It will be symbolic, in a sense, as I look for redemption in the city that crippled me. I'm just minutes off of a Boston Qualifier and hope to achieve that goal in the next 5 years.

For now, I just enjoy setting goals and taking each run one step at a time - one day at a time.”

Why are you running the ?

“We ran the marathon relay in 2021, so we wanted to come back to run the “My friend, Bella, and I started running summer of 2023. I said “Let’s train for a 10K.” We went to go sign up and she said “Let’s just do a half marathon, it’ll be fine.” We did our first half marathon together in matching outfits!! The day after the race, we signed up for the half marathon again in 2024”

“Well, I have lived in Milwaukee my entire life and feel that completion of my first ever full Marathon should happen where I've been raised. I attempted last year but was forced to stop at mile 17 due to terrible pain in my left leg—could barely walk. Turns out it was a strained hamstring that hadn't healed but didn't affect at shorter distances.”

Why are you running the ?

“I won the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon 20 years ago in 2004. This will be my 4th time running.

Unfortunately, this may be my last marathon and I would like Milwaukee Lakefront to be my last race at this distance.

I am a native of the area growing up in Kenosha County attending Westosha Central High School and running for U.W. Parkside under the great Lucian Rosa. I currently reside in Arizona where the weather is hot and dry and the running partners are scarce.

In 2001 I placed 6th with a 2:42.16, then in 2004, I won in 2:35.34 followed by a 4th place finish in 2005 with a time of 2:38.06.

After that, I moved out of Wisconsin and never attempted the distance for 16 years in 2021. My last marathon was in 2023 at St. George in a time of 2:55.49. I hope to finish my 2024 Lakefront Marathon under that 2:44.49.”

“This Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon has been a staple of the Milwaukee Running Community for over 40 years. That is longer than I have been alive! Although I feel like I am not quite ready for a full 26.2 just yet, I feel as though I would LOVE to be a part of this wonderful event in some way, shape or form, which is why I decided to sign up for the Half, plus the walk over the Hoan Bridge!

My running journey began back in 2014 when I discovered the Brewers' Mini-Marathon and 10K. Although I had never run in High School, I was so intrigued by the thought of being able to run across the Warning Track at Miller Park, I immediately signed up as soon as I became aware of that fantastic opportunity. That was my first ever race, but FAR from my last! 20 Half Marathons, and countless 10Ks and 5Ks later, I am still motivated to run! I just love the way it makes me feel, plus seeing all the friendly and familiar faces at all the different races around town is an extra bonus!

I am so excited to FINALLY get out here and run with you come October 6th!”
