Overview
A diagnosis of plantar fasciopathy means that the tough, fibrous band of tissue (fascia) connecting your heel bone to the base of your toes has become irritated.
This strong band of tissue (the plantar fascia) serves to support the arch of the foot. When irritated or injured it can cause a stabbing or burning pain that is usually worse on your first steps in the morning. This is an injury which is very common in people who spend long periods of time walking or standing and has in the past been referred to as 'Policeman's Heel' .
On walking or running, the pain is normally reported to ease when you get going but then come back after you have exercised. Pain can also be worse when starting to weight bear after a period of rest, i.e. getting out of bed in the morning.
Common causes of plantar fasciopathy include prolonged or repetitive activities (jogging / running), diabetes (particularly Type 2 compared to Type 1), poor biomechanics of the foot, poor fitting/well-worn shoes and being overweight. Males and females over the age of 40 are more likely to develop this problem.
TREATMENT
•Pain management (education, manual therapy, taping etc)

•Stretching (in some cases, no great evidence to support)

•Steroid injection in cases with more severe presentation.
