What is a Cabinet of Curiosities or Wonder Room?
In brief, these were collections of objects by individuals in Renaissance Europe chosen to represent various cultures, ideas, and treasures from their travels. They were usually associated with aristocrats and put on display in cabinets or rooms for their visitors both to enjoy and to illustrate their owner’s social status. They were also the predecessors to modern day museums.
Pasadena Museum of History’s Cabinet of Curiosities exhibition takes its cue from these original displays of artifacts to spotlight some of the images, artwork, and objects we have amassed over a century of preserving items intrinsic to the history of this region. Obviously, this is just a tiny glimpse into our ever-expanding Archives and Collections and, as you might guess, the final selection went down to the wire as staff members hesitated over hard choices and favorites versus available gallery space. We trust that this small sampling will help you grasp the diversity and extent of PMH’s dedicated efforts to preserve, protect, and display our stories past, present, and yet to come.
Cabinet of Curiosities: Celebrating 100 Years of Collecting Pasadena History opens at Noon tomorrow (2/24) and will be on view 12-5 pm Wednesdays- Sundays through May 12, 2024.

What a perfect time to celebrate the inspiration, talent, knowledge, and dedication of our two extraordinary guest curators, Arlene Stevens and Leah Zieber, and to thank them and all the dedicated women (and some terrific men, as well) staff and volunteers for the long hours and hard work they put in to bring this exhibit to the public.
The galleries are open 12-5pm Wednesdays-Sundays. In addition, we’re just releasing an exciting roster of exhibition-related in-person and virtual programs. Check our website for more details.
