Each July 4th, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks.

Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks - devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death.

This is a great safety guide for children swimming in lakes and swimming pools. The color of the bathing suit can make it easier or more difficult to see children while they are swimming. This is a good reminder to always have adult supervision when children are swimming.

As we approach the hotter days of summer, please be mindful of a few tips

Wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Drink plenty of water (avoid alcohol and sugary drinks) and don't wait until you are thirsty. Take cool showers. Never leave a child, elderly person, or pet unattended in a car. Be cautious about pavement temperatures for your pets and avoid going barefoot on a road, driveway or sidewalk.

This is why you never have your grill near your home!

Here are six common sensical grilling tips for Memorial Day Weekend.

1. For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use in the months ahead.

2. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

3. Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

4. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.

5.If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have or are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.

6. Never leave your grill unattended when in use.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will enforce an annual spring BURN BAN starting March 16 and continue through May 14.

Since it's inception in 2009 it has decreased close to 40% of spring wildfires.

The deficit of precipitation in the form of snow and rain last fall and during the winter has resulted in an early fire hazard from grass and brush fires. Due to the weather conditions commonly found in early spring, and the lack of moisture in leaves, grass, and brush, fires can spread quickly. Spring winds tend to accelerate the spread of fires. Please abide by the New York State burn ban to avert unintended consequences in our communities.
