The School of Art, Design and Creative Industries is welcoming ✋FIVE✋ new students into our Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts program! We asked Carlos Palmer, who is pursuing an MFA in Studio Arts, Ceramics Concentration, "What attracted you most to ADCI’s MFA in Studio Arts program?" This is what he had to say:

"In undergrad at Montana State University, Ted Adler came as a visiting artist and helped lead a firing. The program at Wichita had been on my radar since. Over the years, and multiple run-ins at NCECA (National Convention for the Education of Ceramic Arts), I constantly ran into Ted and spoke about applying to WSU. My professors Josh DeWeese and Dean Adams strongly encouraged me to work with Ted and explore the program here in Wichita. The multiple atmospheric kilns and facilities available were also very enticing. I enjoy the networking and sense of community that can occur when firing a wood kiln. From scheduling shifts to shared meals, it takes trust and comradery to be successful. I look forward to building a fun, safe community around wood firing ceramics."

Please join us in welcoming Carlos and all of our new MFA students! ⚡🤟

"This series of traditional media drawings express the language of excess and consequence through the depiction of artificial spaces that reflect distortions of literary landscapes, cityscapes and domestic spaces. These fictional places can be viewed but never entered. They become a silent, but ambitious narrative that allows for the exploration of memory, identity, gender, ritual, economics, and class. The narrative implications of these spaces draw on the duality of childhood-joyful fantasy and the lonely isolation. The meticulous rendering in both traditional and digital media is intended to depict complex spatial illusions that compromise the underlying transactions between reality and memory. This recent work examines the invisible and contested spaces within my own history and becomes a vehicle for stories that investigate place, memory, the body, identity and gender."

- Jessica "JB" Burke

⏰: M-F, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The collaboration between Jessica "JB" Burke and Kariann Fuqua forms an artistic "ecotone"—a transitional space where distinct yet intertwined narratives of place converge. Despite being unknowingly raised in the same city in Kansas, it wasn’t until later in life that their paths crossed. Their work reflects a shared fascination with the concept of home as a construct. Both use drawing to explore imaginative world-building that have been shaped by reading, compulsive collecting, ordering, and arrangement.

Burke’s work draws from children’s literature, crafting fictional realms that offer a form of escape. These worlds, rich in iconography, invite viewers to explore, though they remain perpetually out of reach. In contrast, Fuqua’s obsessive mark-making represents environmental systems in perpetual flux, expressing a longing for a grounded connection to place. Her drawings, marked by their labor-intensive process, capture the fragility of ecosystems and the elusive nature of memory.

Together, Burke and Fuqua create a dialogue that navigates the complexities and implications of "place," using their art to explore and seek meaning within the shifting landscapes of our shared experiences.

Be on the lookout for the Visiting Artists Talk: Jessica “JB” Burke & Kariann Fuqua, facilitated by Robert Bubp, in conjunction with "A World Away."

⚡ALL SIX⚡of our BFA in Art Education 2024 graduates have begun teaching this fall, and we're beaming with pride! We asked Natalie Jones, who is now teaching at Briarwood Elementary, "How has your experience at ADCI prepared you to lead your own classroom?" This is what she had to say:

"ADCI provided me with many mentors to help me feel prepared to teach in my own classroom. Through them, I got to know what it means to be a teacher and how to be successful at it. My cooperating teachers in my student teaching have shown me what it takes in the classroom to be successful teacher and learn from my mistakes. Throughout my college career, my community of mentors and teachers have pushed me to think in different ways and help me become the teacher I want to be. I still have a lot to learn, but I couldn't be more thankful for the people that ADCI has brought into my life and who will continue to help me grow and learn for many years to come."
