Just finished another Barral course with the inimitable Rosie Greene on neural manipulation (NM2). This course focused on advanced treatment of the brachial plexus, radial, median, and ulnar nerves, as well as some of the cervical and cranial nerves. The more I learn, the less I am working with the muscles of the body, and the more I am focusing on the visceral, neuro-vascular and ligamentous structures. I’m looking forward to the benefits this body of knowledge will provide my clients as I integrate it into my clinical practice.
A great maiden Swimming Dragon class, working the first posture of the form - Dragon Wakes Up and Stretches, exploring Taoist principles of movement and body mechanics, and an introduction to push hands play. Classes run at 6pm Wednesday evenings.
Just finished my first stint working as a teaching assistant with the Barral Institute for Visceral Manipulation One. It was an incredible experience working with such a fantastic and diverse group of students, including physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Naturopaths, and Myotherapists. A special thanks to our Lecturer Rosie, who never ceases to amaze me with her ability to make the complex simple and accessible, and also to my visceral mentor Ros, for her constant generosity, encouragement, and support.
For those curious about Swimming Dragon Kung Fu and what it is? This question can be best answered simply by watching Master Li’s sublime demonstration of the first form below. Classes begin Wednesday evenings April 5th at 6pm.
I’m honoured to have been personally invited by my teacher Master Li to publicly teach the art of Swimming Dragon Kung Fu. A special thanks to my kung fu brothers Nashua Lee (in the photo below with myself and Master Li) and Ray Galea for introducing me to Master Li and recommending me as a prospective student. Nash and I will be running the class together on Wednesday evenings at 6pm. For enquiries, DM me, or call 0416 473 740.
New Swimming Dragon Kung Fu classes are beginning April 5th at 6pm!

Swimming Dragon training aims to cultivate the individual in his/her totality and is a remarkably complete and balanced system of exercise that has many health benefits. These include improved:
* Flexibility
* Strength
* Coordination
* Balance
* Circulation
* Mental focus
* Stress relief
Classes will run every Wednesday evening at 6pm for an hour and a half. Cost for the class is a weekly direct debit subscription of $25. DM me or call 0416 473 740 to book a spot.
Great to be back teaching with Sifu Dana for the first Master Class this year.
Sifu Dana P. Wong and myself will be running a series of Wing Chun Master Classes at Resilience Massage and Training kwoon in 2023. The theme for these classes is 'Chi Sao - a unique perspective'. Sifu and I will be taking a 'non-traditional' approach to teaching Chi Sao in these seminars that will be informed by our collective experience training in martial arts other than Wing Chun. These arts include: Filipino Kali/Arnis, Tai Chi, and Swimming Dragon Kung Fu.
Training contact reflexes and touch sensitivity is by no means a unique feature of Wing Chun. Many martial arts have a rich variety of drills and techniques used to explore these principles. In this series of Master Classes Sifu Dana and I will be looking at Chi Sao through the lens of alternate martial traditions and the different training drills that they offer. The question we will be encouraging every participant to ask themselves is, "How can exploring alternate training perspectives deepen our understanding of what we practice when training Chi Sao drills?"
CLASS TIMES AND COST:
The first of these Master Classes will be held on Friday 10th of March, and Friday 24th of March. Both classes will run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. The cost of an individual class is $50 for subscription members and $70 for non members. Alternatively, subscription members can also take advantage of the early bird special and book and pay for both classes before the 27th of February for $80.
Places are limited, so reserve your spot quickly. You can book and pay during class or by contacting myself or Sifu Dana directly on:
Chris Gauntlett - 0416 473 740.

Looking forward to seeing you in class!
I have just returned from having spent four incredible days in Christchurch New Zealand, studying neuromeningeal manipulation under the guidance of the wonderful Rosie Greene. Thanks Rosie for sharing your incredible knowledge, skill, and experience with such clarity, warmth, and grace.
For those wondering what neuromeningeal manipulation is, it is an osteopathic system focusing on the treatment of the dura, membranes, nerves, sutures, and bones of the skull, brain and central nervous system. I’m very much looking forward to integrating this sophisticated treatment approach into my clinic.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the JEMS Movement Blog as a guest writer. Thanks for the invitation Joanne. 🙏
JEMS® is a way of working, rather than a set of techniques. The communication aspect is key, as is self awareness in the practitioners themselves. Creativity and individualisation based on sound principles mean that a wide range of patients can be guided to access unrealised resources in themselves.
We have the unique opportunity below to capture a glimpse into the mind of JEMS® Certified Rehabilitation Practitioner Chris Gauntlett as he tells us about a special patient journey, while also hearing from the patient's mother who observed the process. Together, they form a unique insight into a beautiful collaborative adventure.

Thank you to my teacher and friend Sifu Dana for coming down to run this seminar. 🙏
I had a great time working as a teaching assistant at the ACE advanced dry needling course over the weekend. A big thanks to the Advanced Clinical Education director, Shaun Brewster, for putting on the event, sharing his knowledge, and for the invitation to help out. There was a fantastic group students attending that were a pleasure to work with.

After a couple of postponements last year due to Covid lockdowns, I'm pleased to announce that Sifu Dana P. Wong will be returning to Resilience Massage and Training to join me in running a series of Knife Training Master Classes. If you haven't trained with Sifu Dana before, this is an opportunity not to be missed! Sifu Dana has over 30 years of teaching experience and brings a unique perspective to training knife fighting that is grounded both in Wing Chun Kung Fu and traditional Filipino martial arts.
Knife training drills have enormous benefit for:
- Practical self defence skills
- Improving reaction speed, reflexes and timing
- Footwork precision and angles
- Hand/eye coordination
- Sensitivity training and Wing Chun chi sao application.
Sifu Dana and myself will both be teaching together in a 'tag-team' format for this series of Master Classes. The classes will build on the concepts and principles taught in the first two Wing Chun chi sao Master Classes, and will use knife training drills as an alternative lens through which to look at and explore the concepts of Wing Chun Kung Fu. More specifically, Sifu Dana will be undertaking a detailed exploration of the fundamentals of the 'pendulum step'; a unique aspect of legendary Guru Sonny Umpad's traditional Filipino fighting system.
These Master Classes are open to all levels of experience and do not require any previous training in Wing Chun Kung Fu should you wish to attend.
CLASS TIMES:
- Class 1 - Friday May 20th, 6pm-8pm.
- Class 2 - Friday June 17th, 6pm-8pm.
Class Cost:
- $60 per class (regular)
- $40 per class (training subscriber)
Places are limited, so be sure to reserve your spot quickly. You can contact me directly on 0416 473 740, or Sifu Dana on 0408 038 885.
Looking forward to seeing you in class!

This post is a follow on from Sifu Dana P Wong’s on distance. It’s a very common experience of Wing Chun players to end up over reaching as soon as they move into random play; this is due, in part, to spending so much time in Chi Sao drills where it is implicitly assumed that the gap has already been bridged. The other downside of Chi Sao drills is that they lend themselves to creating a mindset that is over reliant on seeking contact, for security and safety, instead of looking to simply hit whenever there is an opportunity.
So what is the training solution? If you just slap the gloves and head-gear on and go for it, rarely does any constructive technique training emerge. A wise man once told me that the trick ‘is to train something specific in a non-specific way.’ One drill that I have found particularly useful for achieving this and getting more comfortable with the non-contact range is boxing’s ‘catch and jab’ drill. Below — adapted for Wing Chun using a jeet kun and chan sao — John and Rob play with this drill. Even with only one variable thrown in (the hook), both students have a natural tendency to shorten the jeet kun, and reach with the catching hand. There is also a tendency to ‘pose’ the position and look for the confirmation of contact with the attacking hand rather than withdrawing it quickly.
This drill is a great way of constructively unlearning the natural instinct to seek the safety of contact by over-reaching.
It continues to amaze me just how simple, yet profoundly effective, JEMS founder Joanne Elphinston’s approach to both coaching and cueing can be…
So my client comes in today and tells me he has knee pain when running. We have done some work on this before and things had been going well, so I am surprised.
I take a look at him run, and see that his movement impulse seems more vertical than horizontal, more pogo stick that hovercraft. I mention this and wonder how it would be to think of gliding over the ground, rather than absorbing into the knee. He identified that he had really focused on the concertina action at hip snd knee that we had spoken of previously.
Ah, it all made sense - this was a component that we had needed to remind the hip and knee to share support forces, but the sense and intention for the running itself is to flow forward over the ground. Equipped just with that, he had another go. Instant and significant knee pain reduction by being the hovercraft rather than the pogo stick. Ahhh.
Let’s keep it simple and let our amazing cerebellum organise us to embody the spirit of the movement.
So good to catch up with my good friend and Colleague Sandra Konrad at the ACE advanced dry needling course this weekend with Shaun Brewster. Thanks to Shaun for hosting such an amazing course. Already looking forward to the next one!
Here, another example of one of the knife drills covered in the upcoming seminars with myself and Sifu Dana on the 20th and 27th of August. This time, the Krusada drill. Here I teach my friend John the flow pattern of the 5 basic angles of attack. This drill emphasises two handed coordination, footwork, forward energy, and ‘staying inside the box’ using short levers to attack and protect vital targets. The final disarm and follow up is an example of the crossing and uncrossing pattern of the drill used in combination with short leverage principles to defend against having the knife hand grabbed by the opponent.
