THE PLANTATION AND THE POOL: DECOLONIAL STRATEGIES IN BRAZILIAN CONTEMPORARY ART
17 May 2023, at 5pm
Banqueting Hall, Chelsea College of Arts, 16 John Islip Street, London SW1P 4JU
Moacir dos Anjos is a writer and curator based at the Fundação Joaquim Nabuco in Recife, Brazil, where he coordinates the Politics of Art project. In this public lecture, organised by International Relations Unit – UAL with CCW International and the Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN), dos Anjos will discuss two main decolonial strategies in Brazilian contemporary art. The first concerns itself with exposing the colonial violence associated with what could be described as a plantation, an economic model that gave rise to the “invention” of Brazil. The second strategy, in turn, completely refuses the reproduction of images of suffering such as those describing colonial Brazil. Instead, it is concerned with affirming, through the production of images, other possibilities of life for groups of people historically abused in Brazil: Black, Indigenous, LGTBQIA+, and the poor. Although different, these are not antagonistic strategies, as both contribute to the construction of a new symbolic landscape for the country. A landscape that is not only marked by pain and damage, but also by the desire for contentment and healing.

'The project for the identification of Argentine soldiers fallen in the Falklands/Malvinas War.
35 years after the end of the Falklands-Malvinas War, Argentina and the UK signed an agreement entrusting the International Committee of the Red Cross to undertake the forensic identification of Argentine soldiers who had fallen in the islands and remained unknown.
Geoffrey Cardozo, former British Army Colonel, and Julio Aro, Argentine ex-conscript soldier, were both involved in the identification project, which relied on the expertise of a forensics team from the ICRC and the 'Equipo Argentino de Antropologia Forense'. They will speak about their memories of the conflict and the remarkable work they carried out post-war.
They will talk about the identification project, the importance of relations between former adversaries, post-conflict best practice and the adherence to international humanitarian law.

Webinar Alert 🙌 - STATE AND MARKET AFTER COVID-19
Online - Tuesday 12th April, 3PM – 4PM (BST)
The King's Brazil Institute and the Brazilian Association for Business Communication would like to invite you for the webinar 'State and Market after COVID-19'.
'Since the financial crisis of 2008, the State has arguably played a more salient role in the regulation of social relations as well as in the introduction of stricter rules on international trade and financial markets. As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, public institutions around the world acquired extraordinary governing powers to organise social life with the rollout of massive vaccination campaigns, the establishment of social distancing measures, and the temporary closing of industries and shops in many places.
After decades of an economic consensus about the centrality of the Market in promoting well-being, in today’s political arena opposing groups represent socio-economic agendas that are potentially irreconcilable. How should we understand the relationship between State and Market after COVID-19? Who are the central actors in the current political game, and what positions do they defend before the Market? Are there communication channels to facilitate a productive dialogue between an empowered regulatory State and the corporate sector?
In our next Blended Webinar, State and Market after COVID-19, Aberje and King’s Brazil Institute invite you to join our team of specialists and discuss with us what would be the best way forward.'

Exciting News Alert 🙌 - It's the start of a new term at KCL and big CONGRATULATIONS are in order for the King's Brazil Institute's two newest PhDs!
Dr. José Claudio Macedo and Dr. Hayle Melim Gadelha! 👏 Super parabéns!
José Cláudio Macedo, PhD
José Cláudio Macedo is a Brazilian Navy Officer and now holds the rank of Rear Admiral. He has served as a surface officer in fleet and district ships, including positions as commanding officer in the Northeast of Brazil and the Amazon region, and has also had experiences aboard ships of the US and Argentinean Navies. He has lectured at the Naval War College and Brazilian War College, and his topics of interest include maritime/naval strategy and policy, strategic and defence studies, crisis management, and international relations. With the previous experience of an MA in Strategic Studies, from Fluminense Federal University (UFF) in Brazil, the doctorate at King's was, undoubtedly, a very challenging experience, especially for not being a native English speaker, but also a quite stimulating, enriching and broadening one. He explained how this is the case, not only for his research efforts in the subjects linked to maritime strategy regarding his thesis, 'Brazilian naval strategic thinking, 1985-2018', but also for all the interactions, through King's Brazil Institute, with people from a wide range of fields of studies at King's and other universities in the UK. His thesis is aimed at understanding how the Brazilian maritime strategy could be explained over that period of time, given all the transformations in the maritime world marked by the end of the Cold War along with the new Law of the Sea and all domestic changes in Brazil that have affected its naval thinking. In this sense, it is a quite unique point of view for the maritime and naval community.
Hayle Gadelha, PhD
Hayle Melim Gadelha's PhD research investigated the diplomatic role of the Exhibition of Brazilian Modern Paintings, held in the UK during the Second World War. His MA (2011) dealt with cooperation among the countries of the Amazonian region, and his BA thesis focused on Brazilian diplomacy within the World Trade Organization (WTO). He lectures at IBMEC/Clipping postgraduate degree in Diplomatic Studies. Hayle has been a career diplomat since 2007, and is currently the Political Counselor at the Embassy of Brazil in La Paz. Most recently, he worked as an international advisor for the Brazilian President (2019), served in London as Cultural Attaché (2014-18) and Beijing, as Head of the Trade Promotion Section (2011-14). He also served in Chile, where he attended the Andrés Bello Diplomatic Academy (Santiago, 2010).

Super congrats to you both! 🙌
