A quick and easy one pot meal!

As it gets to the dark cold nights things like salad aren’t quite as appealing as they are in summer. However it doesn’t mean you can’t have nice tasty low calorie meals with plenty of veg!

This stew only took 45 mins to cook and only 5 mins max to prepare.

Supermarkets now have a great range of pre prepared vegetables in the frozen section that I like to use to save myself both money and time.

In here I have:

Frozen sliced leeks
Frozen diced onions
Frozen baby carrots
Frozen diced swede
Diced Beef

To cook I just throw it all in a pan, with two beef stock cubes and 500ml of water and add some mixed herbs and pepper.

That portion of food in the picture is only 550calories!
And it tastes incredible, is extremely filling and a nice hearty meal for this time of year.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. For me the more simple it can be the better. Give it a try!

A solid point by Martin McDonald here, Carbs get a bad wrap but it’s still the lack of a calorie deficit that is holding you back if you aren’t losing fat!

Piri Piri Chicken

These cook in a bag are a good for batching cooking, I placed 4 chicken breasts in the bag added the flavour & straight into the oven, very easy & quick to use !

Cook time 30-40mins
Prep time 2 mins depending on what you decide to serve it with.

💯 recommend very tasty 😋 lots of different flavours.

Happy cooking 👨🏼‍🍳

Nutrient Dense vs Energy Dense vs Nutrient and Energy Dense

Here we have 3 servings of different foods, all approx 250kcals worth.

In one picture, 5 pieces of fruit. Two medium sized apple and 3 clementines, will equate to around 250 calories. So, quite a decent amount of food volume wise, and also a good amount of nutrients and fibre within, stuff that promotes good health within our bodies.

In another picture we have just 50grams of tortilla chips. (Really not a lot) Again this equates to around 250calories yet they have really no nutritional value to offer when it comes to vitamins, nutrients, things to promote good health for the body. However it is worth noting eating them is good for brain health, because they taste very very very nice and are enjoyable to eat. (Also a important thing!)

In the third picture you have 40 grams of nuts. As you can see this is a very small amount but that also equates to around 250 calories. Now nuts are both energy dense (a lot of calories in a small amount of them essentially) but also very nutrient dense as well. There are a plethora of benefits that come from eating nuts.

So you see this is where we have a problem. We cannot simply label foods “good” or “bad” when it comes to not only our health but also fat loss. Yes nuts are full of nutrients but over eat them and you will gain weight.

It’s important to understand what is actually in the foods we eat, and balancing the foods that offer good nutritional support for our bodies with those we enjoy in life that are just good for life and enjoyment!

Winters Coming..............

In the winter months, guys, it’s important to still keep moving and exercising. Reasons...

1. Staying healthy - your immune system will be helped by you moving in winter and help keep viruses and infections at bay.

2. Caloric balance - in winter we tend to eat more, and maintaining an even calorie balance or deficit can be hard. Keeping on top of your exercise and training will you provide with the balance you require.

3. Mental health - it’s England, we have crap weather! Vitamin D intake will go down as there is less daylight meaning less chance to be out in the sun. Take full advantage of the weekend by getting out and about as weekdays are generally dark when go to work and return. This lack of sun exposure means we are more susceptible to the “winter blues”. Moving more will help keep those happy hormones in full flow and getting out and about on a weekend will keep your vitamin d levels ticking over.

4. Parties galore - Christmas parties, Halloween, bonfire night all mean that our weeknights and weekends may be filled with more food and drink meaning more calories. Keeping cracking on with training helps us not to feel like we have to limit ourselves and not sacrifice/ plateau in our goals.

Keep smashing your training and exercise, guys! 💪

Calorie swaps!

Microwave rice is something that is convenient and tasty when it comes to making meals fast. However it’s slightly more calorific than normal and half a packet is around 220 kcals.

Earlier this week a client told me about a product that is the same as microwave rice and is only 30kcals for an entire pack!

It’s not got the flavour of an uncle bens spicy rice however, used as an alternative with a curry, where the sauce has the flavour it works a treat to add some extra bulk for very little calories.

Eating enough so that we are full and satisfied is a simple yet effective way to help stay on top of things, as constantly battling against hunger can be exhausting.

The more swaps you can find like this that mean you can eat a similar volume of food or even more in this case, for fewer calories, the easier it will be!

We’ve said this before & we will say it again, the scales are not the only tool to measure your progress.

Before you step on those scales think about what you have achieved in the time you have been training.

Don’t let a number dictate your mood or spoil your day..

Recipe!

As it gets closer to winter, and the nights grow darker and colder it’s nice to enjoy a hot meal that’s tasty but also a good option to keep you on track with your goals.

This recipe is a very simple example of how you can still eat well and enjoy your meals.

For those of us who enjoy a little something sweet on an evening whether it be as a pudding or whilst watching tv this is one of the great alternatives I’ve found as something that does the job and is still low calorie and easy to fit into my calorie goal.

Finding these alternatives is a great way to help you stay sane whilst making progress so that you don’t have to completely cut all the things you enjoy out of your life.

Try and assess where you could make a change to these kind of habits to allow you to make progress but not feel like you’re always restricting yourself.

Aligning your values......

The way towards aligning your values is to ask yourself the difficult questions when the chips are down.
Is there a difference between what we say we believe and what we actually do when the pressure is on?
Ask yourself these questions to see if you align with your values...

>How do you spend your time?

>How do your values square with your calendar?

>How do you spend your money?

>How do you react in a crisis?

>What do you measure?

>What do you reward?

>What do you punish?

>Do you practice what you preach?
E.g if you value honesty or openness, how do you react to a bearer of bad news?

Evening guys, Luke here.

As you’ll have seen from previous posts this week, we are retiring the Pro-fit Wakefield page.

It’s been a very fun, enjoyable journey as part of Pro-fit, however the group of PTs are still working alongside each other - just under our own brands.

Going forward, you can find me at the LG Fitness Training page which will be live next week.

I’ll be continuing to put together events and activities (obvs within covid restrictions etc).
The content I’ll be putting out will range from nutrition/exercise, mindset/well being and updates on how the group community is getting on.

This is also my website if you would like to know more about training and trials.

Hopefully see you around the gym or hear from you soon... Luke.

In heath and fitness you will hear a lot of contrasting views. Both may have benefits and both may be correct in what they are saying.
Which should you go for?
When deciding anything like this, the key is to find something that works for you and doesn’t negatively impact yourself or others around you.

05/09/2020

Using myfitnesspal is (and always had been) like using tracing paper at school.⁣

It doesn’t have to be there forever. It’s just to improve habits.⁣

Also, I know someone is going to pop up and say “BuT iT mAkEs Me ObsESsive.”⁣

Well, you know those people who see a peanut and die because they’re allergic, they stay well away from peanuts.⁣

So if you’re someone who has a history of disordered eating or obsession - it’s probably not right for you. ⁣

That being said; way more people need help determining a sensible deficit for fat loss than people who need to dodge calorie tracking. ⁣

As per all advice given: if it’s not right for you... then feel free to fu***ng ignore it. 🤣⁣

Calorie tracking isn’t an exact science but we’re not splitting the atom, it’s about closing the fridge door when you turn up there and realise you’re not hungry. ⁣

I’ve now helped the equivalent of the population of Iceland not only realise their deficit but implement it to get fat loss working. ⁣

The calculator is free to use on my website. ⁣

Learn to use your mind or your mind will use you. Actions follow our thoughts and images.

DON’T LOOK WHERE YOU DON’T WANT TO GO!

Couple of little lessons when I think about this.

1- As soon as you look down it can spark the fear of god into you. Only useful if you can process and overcome the fear. DO NOT allow your fear to paralyse you.

2- If you focus on it, your mind and body will work as 1 and take you there.
This it’s why it is so vital we live a life based around gratitude and powerful moments. We will automatically begin to seek more!

3- Be specific with what you want.
In the photo concerned... ‘I want to get down’ is simply not good enough and could result in dire consequences should somebody oblige without allowing you to define ‘HOW’ you get down.

1- Overcome your fear.
2- Where you focus, energy goes.
3- Live with gratitude.
4- Be specific about what you want.

02/09/2020

Earlier this week a client said to me that they’d seen a post on Facebook that really made them think. It was a quote that said something along the lines of “Life is too short to spend time on a diet”.

Which to some degree I agree with. You don’t want to live your entire life feeling restricted. However, for the most part these kind of posts really annoy me.

I’m my opinion they are typically posted by people who have given up on their goal because of frustration or lack of progress and for that reason, rather than trying something new they adopt a different stance of “mer f**k it”. (Sorry about the language but nothing quite sums it up as well as that does)

Once this stance is taken that becomes the message - and it is actually damaging (again in my opinion) rather than remotely inspiring. It only makes it harder for people who are trying to make progress to stay motivated.

People are sadly often guilty of subconsciously trying to hold those around them back, because seeing their progress is uncomfortable.

My argument in response to that is - life is too short. So we should certainly make the most of it and do what we can to extend it and enjoy it for as long as possible. We can pretend as much as we want that not being on a diet is “enjoying” life, or maybe better stated not being at your physical goal Is something we should just accept and forget about - because yolo!

The sad truth is that it isn’t that easy. You can’t forget how uncomfortable it is to be in physical pain because your weight or strength causes back pain, or leads to diabetes, or you hate what you see in the mirror everyday, or are physically uncomfortable and out of breath every time you walk up the stairs or play with the kids.

It’s so easy to just casually say - enjoy life, forget it. But the reality is those day to day feelings people are unhappy about is what leads to people starting out towards their goals in the first place.

So for me, life is too short to not live it to the full. Find a way to achieve all your physical goals AND enjoy your life without restriction in regards to your nutrition and lifestyle - rather than YOLO, sod it.

I can’t tell you how many goal setting sessions I’ve sat in where someone has set a goal of achieving something they absolutely hate. The conversation usually goes like this:

“I want to run a 5k in 90 days time”, the client decides.

“Cool, do you enjoy running?” I ask.

“No, I absolutely hate it!”

“Then why are we setting a running goal then?”

“...I have no idea”

There are SO many ways of getting fit, maintaining and measuring fitness levels in ways that you actually enjoy.

There seems to be this idea that to get fit and healthy, we must start running, or do something else that we equally despise because ‘that’s what fit people do’.

If you enjoy running, then go for it! But if you hate it (much like I do), then find something else to aim for that you enjoy and therefore will stick to more long-term.

Photos from Pro-Fit Personal Training Wakefield's post 26/08/2020

What is your why?

When setting a goal a lot of the time people get caught up with the numbers - I want to weigh this, I want to be this size, I want to be able to run a 5k in this amount of time.

Sometimes these things can be inspiring but often they can lead to people being a bit, meh - about their goals. Because really - that’s not the exciting bit.

My goal has always been to be fit enough and healthy enough to live an active lifestyle for as long as possible to experience what the world has to offer. Last week I was in Scotland and visited some amazing place. All of which took some exercise and physical exertion to do so. It was comfortable. It was fun. And that’s all I ever want.

So when I’m thinking about why doing what I am doing is worth it, I’m not picturing the number on the scales the next week, or the next time I set. I’m envisioning myself at a place like this, on an adventure, being physically capable enough to do it and enjoy it. That is my why!

Next time you set a goal, really think about why exactly it’s important to you and how it will impact your life, and you may find it much more inspiring!

Photos from Pro-Fit Personal Training Wakefield's post 24/08/2020

Everyday is a step towards our goals (weekends included) whether it be a 1% step forward or a 10% step forward it’s still a step forward in the right direction.

Yesterdays start was all about brain health..
30 mins of reading before chaos in the household (the little people would be up soon as it was 6.30am) followed by pre cycle breakfast - all the colours all the nutrients all the goodness ready for 56 miles 🙈

Start your day the right way - set your self up with a WINNING MINDSET 👊🏽

Have an AWESOME WEEK 😝

Cracking walk around Langsett reservoir with some of the troops today

22/08/2020

This came up on my Facebook memories today from 5 years ago.

I posted about how amazing I felt. I could honestly slap myself 🤦🏽‍♀️

I didn’t feel ‘amazing’ in the photo on the right. My body dysmorphia was out of control, I actually took that photo and thought I looked huge at the time. It was a friend who convinced me to post it and told me to ‘stop being daft’.

At the time the photo on the right was taken, I hadn’t had a period for 4-5 months. I was training twice a day, every day.

I said no to social events. Not because I didn’t want to go, but because the thought of going off track with my nutrition made me so anxious I couldn’t bare the thought of it. I was also way too drained to socialise for a whole evening.

I was truly the unhappiest I’ve ever been, chasing a beauty standard that was unattainable and detrimental to my health.

I’m now roughly a stone and a half heavier than I was in that picture and can now genuinely say that I feel amazing. I can’t tell you exactly how much I weigh, because I literally have no clue and it fluctuates all the time.

I hope this photo stands as a reminder that the ‘inspo’ girls that women often aspire to look like on Instagram usually starve themselves to fit a beauty standard that isn’t attainable. Their anxiety and body dysmorphia is usually through the roof and their highlight reels of ‘feeling amazing’ are usually flat out lies 🤷🏽‍♀️

Your value as a person has nothing to do with your weight on the scales. Remember that 🙌🏽💛

Monday mornings Inspiration ⬇️

For many of us now heading back into the gym thinking about our goals remember there will obstacles, challenges numerous f**k ups and that’s ok this is where we learn.

If you take anything from this legend of lady she was told she would NEVER walk again.

Did that stop her ? ❌

Has she proven the Drs wrong ? ✅

Will she have had challenges along the way ? Absofrickinglutely ✅

Has she given up at the first hurdle ? Not a chance ❌

So guys remember when your mentally torturing yourself because you had that chocolate bar you weren’t going to have or that glass of wine or didn’t quite make your gym session it’s ok, it’s not the end of the world, dust yourself off be ok with it & go again tomorrow..

Over the past 5 months of a changed world due to Covid, people have found themselves in many differing situations.

Some have started new hobbies and tried new things, some have been working as key workers throughout, some have had a very hard time of it. There’s no right way to handle a pandemic!

As we hopefully start to see the light at the end of the tunnel through this period in history, no matter what has gone before, it’s important to look at where you are and go again!

Assess where you want to be and what you want do from where you are now. Break it down into smaller pieces - and go get it!

Diet Coke – Time to be real

Diet Coke should be bad for you. I mean, look at it when compared to its regular cousin

1kcal, artificial sweeteners, artificial colours, artificial flavours. HAS to be unhealthy

Except…it isn’t.

This is an example of the appeal to nature fallacy: the idea that because something is natural it’s good, and so because something isn’t natural it’s bad

It makes logical sense, but the whole point of science is to accept that things that make logical sense to our primitive brains aren’t necessarily true. Science takes facts as they are, rather than as they appear, and then presents us with data that we can use to work out the truth of the matter

The world looks flat to our primitive brains, but science lets us know that it isn’t

And things like diet coke seem unhealthy to our primitive brains, but study after study demonstrates that it isn’t, and so as rational people we have to take that into account

Want my opinion? Drink water more often

But if you want something sweet? Most of us would benefit from choosing sugar free options rather than the full sugar alternative most of the time

And if you’re concerned about artificial sweeteners but want to learn the TRUTH, comment ‘sweeteners’ below and I’ll send you something
