The Department of Forensic Science, Faculty of Science, SGT University organized an autopsy visit from 20th March to 26th March 2024. The final year students of BSc (Hons.) Forensic Science and first year students of MSc. Forensic Science were sent to the mortuary of Civil Hospital, Gurugram to observe post-mortem protocols. The police officers within the mortuary premises, interacted with the students to provide them insights on registering First Information Reports (FIR), preparation of crime scene visit reports, inquest forms and other necessary details to proceed with such medico-legal cases. The students got the opportunity to observe different types of forensic cases like suicidal, homicidal, and accidental deaths (hanging, murder and railway accidents). They were also taught about different incisions that are made by forensic pathologists to study the body cavities and establish the actual cause of death. They were made abreast with the different post-mortem changes and findings which would ascertain the manner, mode and time since death in such situations. Additionally, they were also enlightened about the ethical management of the un-identified corpses. The students were asked to use protective gears like masks and lab-coats to prevent any contamination from the mortuary. These visits provided valuable practical insights into the field of forensic pathology for the participating students. The observation of diverse cases facilitated learning opportunities regarding the assessment of postmortem findings and their forensic implications. Such experiential learning strategies contribute significantly to the academic and professional development of future forensic scientists.
