Scammers would call victims pretending to be victimsโ€™ friend, and upon saving the โ€˜new numberโ€™, scammers would ask for financial assistance soon after. Victims would only discover they have been scammed when they contacted their friends and realised they were not the one who had asked for the financial assistance.

CHECK with your friend by calling his original number to verify the earlier call before saving the new number.

Recent global IT outage a timely reminder to stay vigilant against scams 20/08/2024

Scammers may leverage on local or global events that capture widespread public attention, like the recent CrowdStrike IT outrage or Singaporeโ€™s Budget 2024 announcement, to perpetuate phishing scams. ๐Ÿ‘ฟ Some common signs of phishing include ๐Ÿšฉ:

(a) Clickable links from unsolicited or random emails, messages, images or advertisements
(b) Spoofed website addresses (such as www.m1cr0soft.1234.com.co)
(c) Requests for your one-time passwords (OTPs), personal or banking details
(d) Prompts to download attachments or third-party apps outside official app stores

Always remember to perform these CHECK actions ๐Ÿ“‹:

(a) Do not use links or QR codes provided by unknown persons to make payments or transfers
(b) Never disclose you personal information, internet banking and social media account details, and OTPs to anyone
(c) Always verify the authenticity of unsolicited links you received and check the webpage addresses for discrepancies
(d) If you are unsure whether the situation you are facing is a scam, check with a trusted individual or call the anti-scam helpline at 1800-722-6688

Received an SMS from the Government? Here's an easy way to tell if it's real 25/07/2024

๐Ÿ“ฃ From 1 Jul 2024, all SMSes sent from government agencies, ministries, statutory boards, and services will show โ€˜gov.sgโ€™ as the sender ID. It makes it easier for the public to verify authentic government communications sent by SMS, with greater confidence and accuracy. ๐ŸŽฏ

๐Ÿ“ฒ A legitimate SMS from the government should have all four of these indicators: ๐Ÿ“‹

(a) The sender ID is gov.sg with all letters in lowercase.
(b) The SMS begins with the full name of the agency or service that sent it.
(c) The SMS ends with this signature: โ€œThis is an automated message sent by the Singapore Government.โ€
(d) SMSes from gov.sg are grouped into a single conversation, even if they are from different agencies.

Always remember that government officials, especially the Police, will never ask the public to do the following over the phone or through text messages: ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

(a) Transfer money to bank accounts;
(b) Request for personal, banking, SingPass or CPF-related information;
(c) Ask you to click on links that lead to bank websites; or
(d) Ask you to install applications or software from third-part websites.

Friend or fraudster: Beware of unusual requests via text messages or calls 23/07/2024

Received a call from an unknown number and the caller claims to be someone you know? The caller asks you to guess his/her identity and asked you to save the new number? Subsequently he/she asks you an emergency loan, help to perform a banking transaction or install a third-party app to make restaurant reservation? This is a Fake Friend Call Scam! ๐Ÿ˜ก

Do these CHECK actions ๐Ÿ“‹:

โ€ข Verify the callerโ€™s identity by calling their last known number, contacting them via other means or meet up in person
โ€ข Check with someone you trust, such as mutual friends, to confirm the identity of the caller
โ€ข Only install apps from official app stores and do not click on links sent via text messages by someone you have not verified
