Scammers would call victims pretending to be victimsโ friend, and upon saving the โnew numberโ, scammers would ask for financial assistance soon after. Victims would only discover they have been scammed when they contacted their friends and realised they were not the one who had asked for the financial assistance.
CHECK with your friend by calling his original number to verify the earlier call before saving the new number.

๐ฃ From 1 Jul 2024, all SMSes sent from government agencies, ministries, statutory boards, and services will show โgov.sgโ as the sender ID. It makes it easier for the public to verify authentic government communications sent by SMS, with greater confidence and accuracy. ๐ฏ
๐ฒ A legitimate SMS from the government should have all four of these indicators: ๐
(a) The sender ID is gov.sg with all letters in lowercase.
(b) The SMS begins with the full name of the agency or service that sent it.
(c) The SMS ends with this signature: โThis is an automated message sent by the Singapore Government.โ
(d) SMSes from gov.sg are grouped into a single conversation, even if they are from different agencies.
Always remember that government officials, especially the Police, will never ask the public to do the following over the phone or through text messages: ๐ฟ
(a) Transfer money to bank accounts;
(b) Request for personal, banking, SingPass or CPF-related information;
(c) Ask you to click on links that lead to bank websites; or
(d) Ask you to install applications or software from third-part websites.
