Orchid cultivation is part of our living heritage. Closely tied to our history and culture, cultivating orchids was at its peak during the 1950s to 1980s, facilitated by strong research and hybridisation. Our nation was home to over 220 native species of orchids, and around 60 of them are still flowering in the wild today.

Postcards provide historical clues and enrich the layers of historical knowledge that we accumulate about people, places, dressing and habits of the past. Postcards may also be looked upon as a nostalgic material culture that is part of heritage preservation. Yet, it is important to recognise that still images captured by the camera have for the longest time served as a basis for the construction of inaccurate perceptions and opinions, stereotypes and half-truths of those being studied, while affording those who engage with them the legitimacy of ‘science’.

What do Confucius, a unicorn and a celebratory dance have in common?
The qilin was said to have been the mythical creature that correctly predicted the birth and greatness of the famed sage Confucius to his mother. Often believed to be an excellent judge of character, the qilin is associated with righteousness, benevolence and virtue.
Depicted as a ‘Chinese Unicorn’ from the Qing dynasty, the qilin may be depicted with one, two or more horns. It is a mythical creature with a fierce demeanour, yet a peaceful disposition.
In Singapore, the most significant representation of the qilin is in a contemporary dance mainly performed by the Hakka community, though there are few remaining dance troupes today.
The qilin dance originated as a ritual to cleanse areas where farmers dwelled to drive away evil spirits, given that the Hakka people historically subsisted by cultivating the earth. The dances also invoked and celebrated good harvests for the farming community.
Now that’s legendary.
