Happy Valentine's Day, Ramblers!

St. Valentine's Day advice from Pedro Arrupe, SJ, former superior general of the Society of Jesus (1907-1991). Actually, advice for every day.

When I was writing my book "The Jesuit Guide" I tried to track down the original source of this popular mediation, but couldn't find it. Finally, I asked Father Arrupe's great friend and longtime colleague Vincent O'Keefe, SJ, about its provenance. He smiled, because, as he later explained, he was often asked about this quote. It doesn't appear anywhere in Arrupe's official writings, so Father O'Keefe suspected that Arrupe said it at a conference or a retreat and someone wrote it down and circulated it. "And it's just the kind of thing he would say!" said Fr. O'Keefe.

Today begins the first day of Hunger Week - follow Hunger Week - Loyola University Chicago for updates on events!

"O God, you entrusted to us the fruits of all creation so that we
might care for the earth and be nourished with its bounty.

You sent us your Son to share our very flesh and blood and to
teach us your Law of Love. Through His death and
resurrection, we have been formed into one human family.

Jesus showed great concern for those who had no food - even
transforming five loaves and two fish into a banquet that
served five thousand and many more.

We come before you, O God, conscious of our faults and
failures, but full of hope, to share food with all members in
this global family.

Through your wisdom, inspire leaders of government and of
business, as well as all the world's citizens, to find just, and
charitable solutions to end hunger by assuring that all people
enjoy the right to food.

Thus we pray, O God, that when we present ourselves for
Divine Judgment, we can proclaim ourselves as One Human
Family with Food for All." -Pope Francis

Thanks Addison Mauck for these wise words and food for thought!

As we approach this Ignatian Heritage Month embracing our “cannonball” moments in the spirit of St. Ignatius’ faith journey, we are called to take time to identify the moments in our own lives that have defined who we are, what we value, and how we live. This quote from Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ challenges us to lose ourselves in love in order to find ourselves, and to experience the moments that define our lives.

As you continue this week, think about what it is that you love. What gets you out of bed in the morning and keeps you up at night? What tops your priorities and consumes your attention? What are the moments in your life when what you love been defined in an absolute way?

Today Damian Torres-Botello, a Jesuit Scholastic at Loyola, shares a cannonball moment in his life.

My grandmother died in 2008. It wasn’t her dying, or being in the room when she passed away, or realizing the woman who helped raise me no longer walked the earth; these were not cannon balls, though significant in and of themselves. Somehow it was the cannon ball of time. People aren’t permanent, lives pass by, and eventually we all fade into remembrance. What was I doing with my life? The choices I was making, how were those corresponding with the love I received from my grandmother? If God blessed me with great figures like her, then God was gifting me with an opportunity to make my life into something beyond the irresponsible choices I was making. Who does God say that I am? I looked at the lessons and words of those who loved me. And I saw a life not worth squandering but worthing saving.

How can you take a moment of frustration, disappointment, or pain and turn it into a positive moment of growth, discovery, and understanding?

Fr Greg Boyle - Kinship - There is No Us and Them 11/13/2015

Thanks so much to Loyola senior Hannah Coley, for this beautiful reflection on kinship:
What does it mean to be in right relationship with God and in right kinship with one another? Furthermore, in what ways can we be living testaments of the Gospel this Ignatian Heritage Month?
Fr. Boyle, S.J., founder of Homeboy Industries in L.A., describes a concept called the “circle of compassion”. We, as young people of faith, must inch beyond the interior of the circle of society. This interior space of superiority, exclusivity, and privilege dismisses God’s loving plan for us. God calls us to this circle’s edge, where we can meet our brothers and sisters who are shadowed and victimized by society and who are vulnerable to persecution, prejudice, racism, poverty and intolerance because of such systematic and deep-seeded persecution.
-But- How do we inch our way to the outer most margins of this particular circle?
We are called to recognize our kinship in creationship.
Despite our brokenness, God loves us undyingly. If God is capable of undyingly and perfectly loving us, can we not strive to love one another in a similar way? Referred to by Father Boyle and enlightened by Mother Theresa, “We’ve forgotten that we belong to each other.” May we recall and live into our shared human experience of brokenness and agape (selfless, unwavering love) during this Ignatian Heritage Month, and may we serve the world as physical embodiments of God’s love.
