The Small Animal Internal Medicine team at the Oregon State University Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital is recruiting cats with chronic kidney disease for a research study evaluating the potential benefit of f***l microbial transplantation to correct dysbiosis and reduce concentrations of gut-derived uremic toxins.

"Chronic kidney disease is common in older cats and unfortunately treatment options are limited," said Dr. Stacie Summers, principal investigator and assistant professor of small animal internal medicine. "Restoring health to the gut microbiome with f***l transplantation using f***s obtained from a healthy donor is a potential therapy in these cats that could help them feel better and slow the progression of their disease."

There is no cost to participate in the study, and we are looking to recruit 20 cats.

Patient criteria:
- Has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.
- Has a blood creatinine concentration between 1.6-2.8 mg/dL.
- Does not have diabetes, hyperthyroidism or inflammatory bowel disease.

Participation involves:
-Collection of stool samples from the litterbox.
- Exam visits at the OSU Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Corvallis, Oregon.
- Monitoring blood tests over a three-month period.
- Cats receive single f***l e***a followed by oral capsules.
- Cats receive diagnostic testing to stage and monitor their disease including:
> Physical exam by a board-certified internist.
> Blood pressure measurement.
> Complete blood count and serum biochemistry panel.
> Urinalysis.
> Urine protein test.
> Urinary ultrasound.

If you think your cat qualifies, please email Dr. Stacie Summers (principal investigator) to find out more information: [email protected]

"Trout was brought in to my work and diagnosed with a congenital heart defect that put him into heart failure at 8 weeks old. I knew I couldn’t see such a young dog be euthanized so I adopted him and took him to the teaching hospital at OSU for heart surgery. All of the staff and doctors were so kind and helpful, they offered to see if the animal care fund would help cover some of the costs because of the unusual situation and since he needed the surgery ASAP.

He underwent open heart surgery and the amazing doctors were able to ligate the PDA vessel. He recovered well and got to come home the next day! He has been the absolute best addition to our family, even though we weren’t expecting him. He is the happiest little guy and is always ready to go on any adventure! He loves to run, hike, hunt, and then is ready for cuddles at the end of the day. We have a one year old who is also absolutely in love with him, we now cannot imagine our life without him!

Thank you to all the doctors and support staff at OSU, along with the donors who contribute to the Dr. Olive K. Britt Animal Care Fund for saving our little Trout’s life! 💙" -- Emily Burton
