What Happens During A Pediatric Vision Screening?

As your child grows and develops, the depth of the vision screenings will become more in-depth and check for different abnormalities. For example, a pediatric vision exam for an infant will involve tests of pupil response to light, their ability to fixate on an object and follow it with their eyes, and other similar exams. As they get older, they will be tested with retinoscopy, which examines the retina, random dot stereopsis to see how well your eyes work together, and a visual acuity test, in which they will also be asked to read letters or numbers of various sizes on a chart at a specific distance to observe how far they can see. These tests can help identify issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, strabismus, a misalignment of the eyes, color blindness, problems with depth perception, and more.

Why Is Newborn Care Important?

While it is natural for new parents to show the utmost care for their newborn baby, there are so many different things to consider, and remember that it can be difficult for parents to do so on their own. As such, the desire to care for one's baby is not always matched with the knowledge of how to do so in every situation, especially for new parents. With that in mind, having a board-certified pediatrician who is trained and experienced in providing expert medical care to newborns is an invaluable support for parents.
Newborn care can help minimize the risk of your baby acquiring an illness or accidental injury while also optimizing their growth and development. Additionally, newborn care can provide parents with the reassurance that their child's pediatrician will take excellent medical care of their child and be in their corner should they need any medical guidance or advice as they care for their little one.

Developmental Disabilities:

Developmental disabilities are severe, long-term problems. They may be physical, such as blindness. They may affect mental ability, such as learning disabilities. Or the problem can be both physical and mental, such as Down syndrome. The problems are usually life-long, and can affect everyday living.

Often there is no cure, but treatment can help the symptoms. Treatments include physical, speech, and occupational therapy. Special education classes and psychological counseling can also help.

What Are the Symptoms of an Allergy?

An allergy arises when your immune system mistakes a harmless substance (allergen) for a threat. This triggers an inflammatory response, leading to symptoms that vary depending on the allergen and the individual. These signs can help you identify a potential allergy and seek medical attention.

Common allergy symptoms often involve the respiratory system. You might experience a runny or stuffy nose, accompanied by frequent sneezing. Itchy, watery eyes are another telltale sign. In some cases, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or coughing can occur, indicating a more serious reaction.

Why Is a Sports Physical Important?

The sports physical is important for ensuring that it is safe for the child to participate in sports activities at the start of a new school year or sports season. The participant's health and well-being during sports participation are at the heart of a sports physical, by providing a series of tests and exams that will check their strength, flexibility, joints, vision, blood pressure, heart rate, heart, lungs, and other functions of the body that can be impacted through physical activity. It will also look at the child's medical history including existing or previous medical conditions, previous surgeries, injuries and hospitalizations, allergies, any medications the child is on, and if they have ever had problems with breathing, chest pains, feeling dizzy, or fainting.

Do Pediatricians Treat Ear Infections?

Ear infections are one of the most common reasons why parents bring their little ones to the doctor.
An ear infection, or otitis media, is the result of bacteria and fluid building up in the middle ear. Adults can get ear infections, but they are much more rampant in children. This is because a child's eustachian tubes (the part of the ear that drains fluid) are smaller and nearly horizontal. In contrast, an adult's eustachian tubes are angled towards the ground. As a result, bacteria and fluid can easily accumulate in a child's tubes, resulting in an infection.

Ear infections in children typically come with some telltale signs. Many parents report the following symptoms in their children when they visit our pediatricians.

- Fever
- Pulling at the ears
- Fussiness or crying
- Broken sleep
- Difficulty hearing
- Loss of balance
- Congestion

Heat-Related Illnesses Include:

Children's bodies are less able to control their body temperature, making them more vulnerable to heat disease. There is a risk of heat exhaustion (headache, dizziness, nausea), heatstroke (confusion, elevated temperature), and heat cramps (muscle cramps). Avoid them by wearing light clothing, drinking enough of water, shielding them from the heat during midday, and never leaving them in hot automobiles unsupervised.

The Importance of School and Sports Physicals

School and sports physicals play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of young athletes. These comprehensive examinations go beyond simply clearing a child for participation; they offer a valuable opportunity to identify potential health concerns early on and promote overall safety.

Regular physical exams allow doctors to assess a child's fitness for physical activity, considering their growth, development, and any underlying medical conditions. This proactive approach can help prevent injuries by identifying any limitations or potential risks associated with specific sports. Early detection of health issues, like heart problems or asthma, is also crucial. By addressing these concerns early, doctors can develop personalized management plans to ensure safe participation in physical activities.

Why Are Childhood Vaccines So Important?

Diseases that used to be common in this country and around the world, including polio, measles, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), rubella (German measles), mumps, tetanus, rotavirus and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) can now be prevented by vaccination. Thanks to a vaccine, one of the most terrible diseases in history smallpox no longer exists outside the laboratory. Over the years vaccines have prevented countless cases of disease and saved millions of lives.

Immunity is the body's way of preventing disease. Children are born with an immune system composed of cells, glands, organs, and fluids located throughout the body. The immune system recognizes germs that enter the body as "foreign invaders" (called antigens) and produces proteins called antibodies to fight them.

The first time a child is infected with a specific antigen (say measles virus), the immune system produces antibodies designed to fight it. This takes time usually, the immune system can't work fast enough to prevent the antigen from causing disease, so the child still gets sick. However, the immune system "remembers" that antigen. If it ever enters the body again, even after many years, the immune system can produce antibodies fast enough to keep it from causing disease a second time. This protection is called immunity.

Breastfeeding Myths

Moms-to-be and new moms get a lot of baby advice and sometimes they don't know what they should listen to and what they should ignore. Although people usually mean well, not all of it is based on facts, and myths and misinformation about breastfeeding are common. The fact is that breastfeeding is a healthy way to feed your baby. The decision to breastfeed is a personal one, and it should also be an informed one.

What Ages Do Kids Need Shots

Children will get many vaccines within the first year of their life. Additional booster shots and other vaccines are scheduled before they start school. As they get older other vaccines are suggested, but they are not required by law. Additional booster shots are also recommended to maintain their immunities.

Why Do Schools Require Physical Examinations for Students?

Throughout their life, children spend many hours at school, under the care and supervision of a variety of teachers and school support staff. The school needs to know if their students have any ongoing medical conditions that may require medication to be taken during school hours or that need to be taken into consideration should the student become ill or injured during school hours. Student records should be updated at the beginning of each school year, with updated medical information on the student. Whether the school requires proof of the physical exam at the start of the school year, is up to the individual school and school board.

What Is the Difference between a Vaccination and an Immunization?

While the terms immunization and vaccination are typically used interchangeably, there are slight differences to be aware of. Vaccination describes the physical act of receiving a vaccine while immunization (also sometimes referred to as inoculation) describes the process of becoming immune to a disease via vaccination. Both vaccination and immunization protect you from symptoms and complications of many different diseases, many of which were once life-threatening before the advent of vaccines.

How Often Should My Baby Be Sleeping?

Every baby will have different sleep patterns and habits. Many newborns will sleep for up to 16 to 17 hours a day; however, only expect them to sleep for a few hours at a time. Sleep patterns won't become solidified until after your baby is about six months old.

You should also put babies on their backs when they sleep to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Until babies are old enough to roll over by themselves, it is advised that all parents put babies to sleep on their backs only and never on their sides or stomachs.

What Does a Pediatrician Do during the First Appointment?

Your first pediatric visit will be within the first week since birth and may be done in or out of the hospital. You can expect many things to be covered during your first visit to ensure you and your baby are managing just fine. First, your baby's weight, length, and head circumference will be measured. We do this to establish a baseline to compare during future visits and verify they are growing well.

What Are a Newborn's Feeding Habits?

For the first six months of your baby's life, breast milk or formula will be their main source of nutrition. Both you and your pediatrician will monitor your baby's eating habits to ensure that your baby is getting the nutrition they need and growing as it should.

If your child is being breastfed, you may find that your baby will eat more often than formula-fed. This is completely normal. Most breastfed babies eat every two to three hours, while babies that consume formula may eat every three to four hours.

What Is Pediatric Asthma?

Childhood asthma is also known in the medical field as pediatric asthma. This type of asthma is the most common serious chronic disease among infants and children, but it is also very difficult for doctors and pediatricians to diagnose. In infants and children, asthma may appear to be as:

-Wheezing when the child is breathing
-Excessive coughing
-Rapid breathing
-Labored breathing
-Complaining of the chest hurting
-Decrease of energy
-Feelings of tiredness or weakness

Some children only get these symptoms when they are physically active, like when exercising or playing a sport. If that is the case, it is called exercise-induced bronchospasm. Pediatric asthma is just like asthma in adults in the sense that it cannot be cured. However, with the right medications and an appropriate treatment plan, the symptoms can be controlled nicely. It is extremely important to catch pediatric asthma in the early stages to prevent damage to the growing lungs in children.
