OHCRA’s longstanding partnership with Hawaiian Airlines is profound and we are grateful for their continued support and encouragement of our wa’a culture!
Meet the indomitable Lorilei Rawlins Crivello, founder and producer of the Molokai Canoe Festivals Kulāia. With unwavering dedication, Lorilei has brought together the paddlers of and the Molokai community, weaving a beautiful tapestry of culture, unity, and aloha. A member of the OHCRA Moloka’i Advisory Council, she has worked tirelessly for nearly three years, helping to restore the races and ensuring they return to their roots.
Through her efforts, Lorilei has bridged community concerns and championed the vision of bringing the races back to the heart of Molokai, honoring the deep cultural and familial connections we celebrate as ‘ohana wa‘a. Her leadership has fostered a renewed spirit of togetherness, where paddlers and the Molokai community gather not just for competition, but to perpetuate the rich traditions and values that make these races so special. Mahalo nui, Lorilei, for your tireless work and for being the guiding force behind this beloved festival and the legacy we share.

Today we honor Ka Ala Nui I Ka Piko o Wākea, the path to the autumnal equinox, a time when day and night find perfect balance. This significant shift marks the start of our wet season in Hawai‘i, following the lunar month of Hilinamā and before the arrival of ‘Ikuā. It is a time for our kilo to pay close attention to the changing winds, tides, and signs ensuring we continue our role as stewards from mauka to makai.
Let us be mindful of these changes and honor the ‘Ike Kūpuna passed to us as we observe, pivot, and restore.

Sound words.
Are you Mākaukau?
“ʻAʻohe ʻauwaʻa paʻa i ka hālau i ka mālie.
No canoes remain in the sheds in calm weather.”
This is a powerful reminder of the importance of being mākaukau (prepared) and seizing opportunities.
When conditions are favorable, it's the perfect time to take action and pursue your goals! Many opportunities don’t last forever.
Mahalo nui to our Mana Maoli Intern, Waiʻolukea of , for creating this awesome graphic and caption to share!
The Henry Race is this weekend - mahalo Hui Lanakila Canoe Club for putting this memorial race together.
Here’s a little history on the man who’s name we honor in racing this weekend - Henry Keawe Ayau Jr.
Henry’s background reveals an exceptional Hawaiian man of rich experience and high achievement. Whether it be working out on the paddleboard or fishing with the late great Duke Paoa Kahanamoku in the decades past, doing business or donating generous amounts of time to many fine organizations, it all adds up to a big man with a big heart. Henry paddled and coached, and is recognized for having coached the winningest canoe paddling teams ever in HCRA history. And his legacy lives strong in our canoe clubs to this day. For those that knew him, his parting words can still be heard -
