Camp KauKau!

Exciting aromas are wafting through the halls at the Agricultural Science Building within UH Manoa!

Camp KauKau is a delectable experience that offers middle schoolers a unique opportunity to explore Hawaii’s culinary heritage. Discovering the diverse ethnic fusions that have shaped our favorite foods within Oahu.

Tina Mueller, one of our program leaders, mentioned that this initiative aims to showcase how early Hawaiian settlers influenced the island's cuisine by incorporating their traditional foods and diets. Over time, the cultural exchange between diverse ethnic groups has woven together their unique culinary traditions, creating a rich tapestry of flavors and techniques that has not only contributed to Hawaiian cuisine's widespread popularity but also become an integral part of its distinct identity.

Throughout the week-long program, students learn kitchen and knife safety, workforce development skills, and cultural knowledge. They participate in engaging activities such as food matching games, "I am" poems, and recipe book creation.

The highlight for many was undoubtedly the delicious array of foods offered at the camp such as air fried malasada, banana lumpia and lots more delicious foods!
making it a top favorite among their experiences.

A common takeaway for students was the appreciation for exploring different Hawaiian cuisines and developing a heightened sense of responsibility through their culinary experiences, while also inspiring youth to appreciate the richness of food and heritage. The camp also fostered a sense of community that can be carried forward to future generations, creating a lasting impact on all involved.

Successful, Hawai'i designer, Lynn Sakutori, found her love of sewing through the 4-H program. While in 4-H, she competed in fashion competitions and learned life skills that were necessary for her future ventures. She then went on to get a degree in Fashion Design through the Fashion Design and Marketing program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Now she owns her own fashion line, always a.line, located in South Shore Market in Kaka’ako.

"...that's how I discovered sewing. I took a class through 4-H and I loved it! I loved it so much that my parents bought me my own sewing machine. I would go home after school and just sew. It was fun. 4-H helped me be where I am now. I also went through the 4-H fashion area, so I was able to go to national competitions on the mainland."
