Carrol Davenport, MDiv. CT, Coordinator for Spiritual Care and Bereavement Services, at Hospice of Northeast Missouri (a service of Hannibal Regional), has been awarded the Ron and Elsie Gaber Founder’s Award for Excellence in Hospice. This recognition, established through a generous donation from Ron and Elsie Gaber of Kirksville, aims to recognize outstanding individuals who demonstrate unwavering commitment and exceptional service in providing comfort and support to Hospice patients and their families.

Carroll received several nominations for this award. One nomination was submitted by a family member of a hospice patient, and it sheds light on Carrol’s profound impact in the organization and with those she serves. “This lady, Carrol Davenport, is something else,” said Barb Smith. “I am honored to make this nomination. In 2007 we met because we decided it was time to reach out to Hospice. We hated to make that call. It felt like we were giving up hope that a miracle could still happen. We went through the process and one was meeting the chaplain Carrol. She made us feel so comfortable and at peace with our decision.” It was because of Carrol that Barb later joined Hospice as a volunteer.

“I have grasped a lot from her,” writes Barb. “With her outstanding sense of insight into each person’s emotional situation. Carrol has a way of looking at something very simple and giving it value and worth. Her intuition about people and their lives in general is very inspirational. She is one of those leaders that excel in her field. I am proud to call her my friend.” The Gaber Founder’s Award for Excellence in Hospice Services is a testament to Carrol Davenport’s exemplary service and her profound impact on the lives of those she serves.

March is National Social Worker Month and Hospice of Northeast Missouri is grateful for our very own social workers, John Bambrick and Janelle Albright. Our social workers make a huge difference in the care of patients and their families!

Do you ever wonder what a hospice social worker does? They do a little bit of everything to help patients and their family navigate end-of life care! A hospice social worker provides emotional support to the patient as well as their family. If a patient wants to travel, the social worker arranges care for them at their destination. If a family is unable to pay their heating bill, the social worker explores community resources that might help. If there is family turmoil, the social worker can facilitate a family meeting to help them work through the problem. If a patient needs a handicap parking permit, the social worker helps to make that happen.
Thank you John and Janelle for all that you do!

The holidays are generally perceived as “the most wonderful time of the year.” But for those who are facing grief after the death of a loved one, the holidays may instead be a time filled with pain and sadness.

Even those for whom grief is not as fresh, the holidays may serve as an annual reminder of the loss—not only of that person, but of tradition and celebration.

If you are struggling to figure out how to celebrate this holiday season without a loved one or if you are supporting someone who is struggling join us for a free seminar on Grief During the Holidays. The free seminar will take place from 12:00 pm to 12:50 pm on Wednesday, November 29th at the Long Branch Area YMCA on 1304 S Missouri St. in Macon.

For more than 40 years nationally, hospice has helped provide interdisciplinary, supportive care to millions of people nationwide, allowing them to spend their final months wherever they call home and surrounded by their loved ones. Hospice teams, such as the team at Hospice of Northeast Missouri, craft plans of care that ensure pain management, therapies, and treatments all center on the patients’ and their loved ones’ goals and wishes. Hospice care also provides emotional support and advice to help family members become confident caregivers and adjust to the future with grief support for up to a year. Hospice services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and many private insurances.

Ron and Elsie Gaber of Kirksville recently offered a generous donation to Hannibal Regional Foundation to support hospice services in northeast Missouri. This donation created the Gaber Founder’s Award for Excellence in Hospice Services Endowment for Hospice of Northeast Missouri. The endowment assists in recognizing hospice care workers and volunteers, and recognizing those who go above and beyond in their service to hospice care and the patients of Hospice of Northeast Missouri. Nominations are now open for this prestigious recognition. More on the award and nomination form can be found at hospiceofnortheastmissouri.org, and nominations are open until November 10. Nominations are accepted for both hospice employees as well as volunteers. The Founder’s Award for Excellence will be announced in November, during Hospice month.

Hospice care offered through Hospice of Northeast Missouri is a service families throughout northeast Missouri are very appreciative of. Without the visionary leadership and dedication of Ron Gaber and others, Hospice of Northeast Missouri would not exist today. Ron saw a need to address end-of-life care for those living in Adair County, and with the help of other dedicated volunteers they created Hospice 2000 in 1993. Ron served as the founding president of Hospice 2000 from 1993-97, as well as the volunteer and bereavement coordinator in the early years. Ron was certified and taught thanatology courses at A.T. Still, Truman State and Ball State Universities. He also provided numerous training seminars and workshops. He is the author of “The Death of Adult Children Through the Eyes of Grieving Parents” and is retired Dean Emeritus of Students and Vice President Emeritus of Student Affairs at A.T. Still University.

As Hospice 2000 developed, they recognized the need for this service was much greater than just Adair County and grew the organization to its current status as Hospice of Northeast Missouri. Since Hospice of Northeast Missouri became a part of the Hannibal Regional Healthcare System family in 2022, it is now a service of Hannibal Regional and is supported in part by donations to Hospice through the Hannibal Regional Foundation. Most recently over $200,000 was raised for hospice services in northeast Missouri, with funds being used for financial assistance and gift cards for patients and families when on hospice services. It is rated 5 Stars by CMS and is one of the few non-profit hospices in northeast Missouri. A team of professionals provides end-of-life care specially trained to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the individual, their caregivers, and families. Hospice of Northeast Missouri serves Adair, Clark, Knox, Lewis, Macon, Putnam, Schuyler, Scotland, Sullivan, and Shelby counties.
