Our Story

So a lawyer and a Mennonite walk into a bar. “What are you doing here?” they ask each other at the same time.

That’s essentially how the story of Advoz starts. In 1980, concerned people in the justice system and concerned people of faith, particularly skilled mediators affiliated with the Mennonite Central Committee headquarters, realized that our community could work through its conflicts and even address injustice much more profoundly through facilitated face-to-face dialogue.

The Lancaster Mediation Center and later, the Lancaster-Area Victim Offender Reconciliation Program and Center for Community Peacemaking were born from this local effort amid a national and global movement to improve the way a community handles conflict, crime and violence.

In 2017, these programs merged to form Advoz with a mission to transform conflict and build community with face-to-face dialogue programs in and beyond Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Advoz continues to bring the best of the legal community together with the faith community, as well as from education and social services partners, to use proven face-to-face mediation methods to provide meaningful, cost-effective alternatives to the traditional justice system. As Advoz, we are also being more pro-active through training programs to prevent escalated conflict, violence and crime.
