How does focused ultrasound work?
During the procedure, ultrasound energy is raised to a very high temperature and then directed at a tiny target inside the brain called the ventral intermediate (VIM) nucleus of the thalamus. This, in turn, raises the temperature of the target high enough to burn the tissue, thus creating the therapeutic effect.

The physician is able to expertly target the small area through use of magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI. This also allows for precise measurement of the temperature which is essential to ensuring that only the intended area is destroyed.

Because ultrasound energy is non-ionizing, the patient is not exposed to any radiation during the procedure. Furthermore, because it can pass safely through skin, muscle, fat, and bone, there is no need for any incisions.

Am I a Good Candidate?

In most cases, issues like trigeminal neuralgia are initially treated with medication. While medication can provide relief, it is not an effective option for all individuals and may cause unwanted side effects. Surgical treatment for trigeminal neuralgia includes microvascular decompression, balloon compression, radiofrequency ablation, and stereotactic radiosurgery.

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that is ideal for patients with pain in a localized region of the face. It is not a useful or safe technique for patients that have pain localized to the eye or forehead. It is an attractive treatment options for patients who require immediate pain relief but who cannot tolerate the more invasive but more definitive microvascular decompression surgery.

Parkinson disease is a degenerative disorder of the brain that affects movement. The disease gradually progresses over time and can become debilitating. Most people associate Parkinson disease with a tremor, but there are multiple other movement problems that patient can experience, including:

- Tremors – Involuntary movements that can occur in the face, arms, fingers, legs, and toes. Tremors usually occur at rest, but in severe cases, tremors can also occur with movement.

- Bradykinesia – Slowing of movement
