Pride Month has its roots in the Stonewall Uprising, which occurred in New York City in June 1969. The uprising was a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, sparked by a series of protests against police harassment and discrimination. The following year, the first Pride marches were organized to commemorate the anniversary of the uprising.

Over the years, Pride Month has expanded to encompass a wide range of activities, including art exhibitions, panel discussions, film screenings, and concerts. These events provide spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals to express themselves freely, share their stories, and create visibility for their experiences.

Armed Forces Day is the day to honor all who currently serve and all who have served, both active and former, in the reserves, National Guard or on active duty. In his February 27, 1950, proclamation announcing the establishment of the holiday, President Truman wrote:

“I invite the Governors of the States, Territories, and possessions to issue proclamations calling for the celebration of that day in such manner as to honor the Armed Forces of the United States and the millions of veterans who have returned to civilian pursuits.”
- Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president of the United States.

Happy Passover to all who celebrate!

In Judaism, Passover is a holiday commemorating the Hebrews' liberation from slavery in Egypt and the “passing over” of the forces of destruction, or the sparing of the firstborn of the Israelites, on the eve of the Exodus.

Civic voluntary activity is not only an integral part of our nation’s history, it is also essential to the health of our democracy. Volunteers have shaped the U.S. since its founding and continue to contribute to its protection and prosperity. Benjamin Franklin believed that citizen service was essential to our democracy and founded our country’s first volunteer fire agency. During April's National Volunteer Month, we encourage you to get out there and support a cause you believe in!

At our Science & Tech Session last week, Caltech gave our cohort a lot to think about! We learned about the institution’s outreach efforts, Caltech Yu’s impact on students and the community, heard presentations from a couple of graduate students about their research, and toured the grounds with an eye towards sustainability goals for the campus and beyond. Special thanks to LP Caltech alumni for putting together this informative morning! ☀🌴
