“Dear Friends,
Please join us Wednesday for opening night in the Boone Gallery on the PCC Campus.
Exhibit: This is the work I showed at the Pakistan National Council for the Arts in Islamabad after my five week journey around Pakistan. We traveled from the mountains of Chitral to the desert of Umerkot and interviewed women on feminism, patriarchy and the women’s movement. Each image is printed on fabric with hand sewn borders by the women of Behbud, Pakistan’s oldest non-profit dedicated to employing women for their economic independence. (Behbud is now building a Maternal and Children’s hospital.) There are video clips, also.
Date and Time:
Wednesday, June 26 from 4:00 pm -7 pm
Boone Art Gallery on PCC Campus (see map below)
Opening remarks are at 5:00 pm.
Parking is on the street (see map on slide 3). I usually park on Hill Avenue. (The exhibit is also in the V Gallery - the work fills up both galleries. You can visit that, too!)”

We are so excited to have Masauko Chipembere back in Pasadena for our Earth Day celebration this Saturday. Masauko is a Malawian-American singer-songwriter, who was born in Los Angeles while his parents were in political exile. Masauko’s sound is a unique mixture of Southern African traditional music with jazz, folk, funk, hip-hop, and reggae. He began playing instruments while a freshman in high school. Since that time, he has shared stages with Stevie Wonder, Queen, India Arie, Mary J. Blige, Hugh Masekela, Black Thought of the Roots, and many more. In 2005, he met and worked with Nelson Mandela. As co-director of his mother’s Women’s Initiative Network Malawi (W.I.N. Malawi), Masauko uses his music to raise awareness and create funding support for educational and permaculture projects in remote villages of Malawi. He currently lives with his family in Costa Rica. Check out his most recent video about his most recent permaculture project in Malawi funded by the UNA Pasadena (link to video in our Instagram bio).
Meet the MC for this Saturday’s Earth Day Celebration, Diana Andrea Soto Teixeira!

LGBTQ+ Heritage Month, or Pride Month, is an annual celebration that takes place in June to honor the LGBTQ+. community and to recognize their contributions, struggles, and achievements. It is a time for LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies to come together, raise awareness, and promote acceptance, equality, and visibility. On June 24th from 6-9pm at Pasadena City Hall, the Parks and Recreation Department of Pasadena hosted its 2nd annual Pride Month celebration, “Love, Loud & Proud!”, to champion Pasadena’s LGBTQ+ community. The event had local food trucks, arts & crafts activities, face painting, a vaccine clinic, and more with local LGBTQ+ organizations, community partners and allies!
World Refugee Day acknowledges the unprecedented 103 million people around the world who have been displaced from their homes; among them are millions of stateless people and an estimated 27.1 million refugees. According to the UN Refugee Convention, a refugee is someone who “fled his or her home and country owing to a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.” The UN and over 100 countries have recognized World Refugee Day since the UN recognized the holiday on June 20th, 2001, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention. World Refugee Day was created to build awareness, encourage empathy, and celebrate the strength and courage of those who have been displaced. The theme of World Refugee Day 2023 is hope away from home: a world in which refugees are always included. You can get involved by donating to the UNA Pasadena Chapter or the UNHCR, signing up for the UNHCR newsletter, joining the UNA-USA, or working with local organizations like Miry’s List.
Today from 5:30-6:30 pm, the UNA Pasadena is facilitating an open meeting where anyone can join us in a Pasadena UNA Board discussion. Those who are interested in the UN’s goals are encouraged to join! The meeting will be held on zoom, so please RSVP to unapasadena@gmail to receive the Zoom link. We hope to see you there!

The day is set to recognize how our country has progressed and how our nation’s goals continue to advocate for advancing equity and racial inclusion. Come out to experience Pasadena’s annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 11 am to 3 pm in Robinson Park. Enjoy live music from the band Luv from Abuv, a performance by Grammy award-winner Hit-Boy, arts and crafts, and food!
