July 20, 2024.
We cannot and should not be ruled by fear. That was one of the messages that came through from Living Liberation Summit on Spiritual Activism yesterday.
We have the power, when we align with and stand in Spirit, to learn from our past and shape our present and our future. Sankofa. We have the power to “shape change.”
Today is July 20, 2024. This is the day that Lauren Olamina, the main character in Octavia Butler’s Parables, begins her journal entries. Not by coincidence, these books reflect so much of our current reality. And while the story is full of struggle and pain, it also reminds us over and over again of some important lessons:
Our teachers are all around us.
When we look to nature, we can see God because God is in all things. Grubs, bees, seeds, trees, forests, rivers, and oceans. All of it.
We have the power to shape change. All that we touch we change. All that we change changes us. The only lasting truth is change. God is change.
We must be open to changing, to seeing the Divine in nature, and to recognizing the teachers around us, especially the ones who may not call themselves “teacher.”
We must not live in fear AND we also gotta stay ready.
This week, Land Based Jawns will be curating a series of informational videos, infographics, and posts covering some of the most essential outdoor/survival/land-based living skills. Save these posts or share them with your families, chosen families, and communities. When it’s all said and done, as climate disasters unfold, genocide goes unchecked, fascism expands, and capitalism poisons, we have to make a choice. We either give in and are consumed by these systems failing all around us. Or we can choose to care for each other and keep each other safe by protecting our minds, bodies, and Spirits.
Hey y’all! We got some news - due to the heat advisory, Bartram’s Garden will be closed so we have to postpone the Block Party. We’re sad we can’t get outside with y’all today but in this ever changing world with climate change as a major threat, we must also change and adapt. Safety and wellbeing of our folks is the most important.
We are working to reschedule and will share more information as soon as we have a new date locked in. Please share and pass this message to anyone you know who planned to come.
Sending love and light, always. Remember that trees provide a lot of shade and underneath can be 5-10 degrees cooler than unshaded areas. Stay cool and stay hydrated. Take care of yourselves and take care of each other 💛🌻💖

Blessings y’all! It’s been a little minute but LBJ is still very much around. These past few months we been thinking through and feeling out how we wanna honor this “Year of Earthseed,” movement, and change. We also been sitting with and processing the pain, fear, and grief that many of us have carried. How do we hold, metabolize, and transmute these into our collective power and realize our divine and infinite possibilities?
Since Land Based Jawns began in 2020, we’ve hosted two Earthseed Skillshares and cohorts. In the third year, we spent time building out the leadership/advisory team and deepening our relationships with existing members. In this fourth year of existence, LBJ is bringing our skillshare to the public and the Philly masses.
Come through our Block Party on July 6th from 12-4pm. Bring ya fam, bring ya kids, bring ya neighbors - this event is free and open to everyone. We’ll be hosting mini versions of our skillshare workshops including: what’s in your go/grow bag, DIY bug spray, how to pitch a tent, edible wild plants, carpentry, meditation, and a self-defense Q&A.
The way we heal, get free, and stay safe is together so come through to skill build with us. It’s still “stay ready so you ain’t gotta get ready” but with love and good vibes.
Spirit-led connection is such a beautiful thing. Inspired by all the community and world building that our new friends at are doing. Thank you for the welcome, the invitation, and that sweet land-based hospitality 🫶🏽
Yo fam!! Happy Year of Earthseed! It’s been a minute. We been quiet cuz life been life-ing but we been around. Here’s some of our favorite flicks from last year.
From caring for the land, to earth bending and pottery with , to collaboratively birthing “Invasive Species” for Asian Arts Initiative, we focused heavy on relationship and community building last year. How do we work together, and work together well and rooted in love and care? How do we go deeper with our community of Black femmes beyond the Earthseed Skillshare? How do we prioritize rest and moving at the speed of each other instead of prioritizing the tasks and demands. Here’s how - we slowed it all the way down, listened to Spirit, and leaned into intentionality and care as praxis. Our liberatory work cannot only be urgency urgency urgency. Spirit and intentionality have to be a part of our liberatory movements and praxis. Period. 🪻💗🌻

Philly!!!!!
We put in WORKKKK yesterday at the Lillian Marrero Branch Library. Land Based Jawns has been partnering with dope community leaders to transform spaces that they steward into Healing Garden Oases for Black and brown communities.
Swipe through to see before and after photos. Over the next few months, we’ll be adding some more comfort touches like benches, tables, and artwork to this library garden.
HUGE thank you to all our folks who came through to help us restore and transform this garden. It was so lovely to have hands in the soil while dancing and building community. Shout out to Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram's Garden for the plant starts. And big thanks to Down North Pizza for the delicious lunch.
Thank you the team at Lillian Marrero Library for your trust and partnership. So much love to our two favorite librarians in Philly, Mieka & Nat. Love y’all!!! 🌻🌱💪🏽💜
