Happy Juneteenth! 🎉 Today, we commemorate June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger announced the emancipation of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Nearly 156 years later, this historic date is now a federal holiday, thanks to the perseverance of Opal Lee. At 89 years old, she embarked on Opal’s Walk 2 DC, walking 1,400 miles from Fort Worth, TX to Washington, DC, advocating for Juneteenth as a national holiday. Let’s honor this day of freedom, reflection, and celebration of African American culture.
