With the Asian American community growing more and more each year, it's important to remember that Asian America is not a monolith, that it encompasses so much diversity and differences in every aspect of culture. It's important to preserve and amplify the voices of Asian Americans who are marginalized because of their ethnicity and/or their class. Come out to our Chai Chai TODAY at 4:30PM in Houston Hall 218 (Ben Franklin Room) to discuss and learn more about this intersection of identities (and get some samosas and chai)!

What is your struggle meal? Oooh; when I'm having a rough day I tend to gravitate towards warm foods that won't upset my stomach, typically a version of Indian rice soup/porridge and a type of bean curry with pickles.
What is the best advice you've ever received? Simply work hard and trust that things will work out; they most likely will.

âIn a city where median income is $39,000 for a family of four we ask: affordable for who? As more and more unaffordable housing projects increase under the guise of development, more and more long term residents and small business owners will be displaced,â the petition reads. âLosing Hoa Binh Plaza would mean losing jobs, small businesses, and the community created there for the last 30 years. It also erases part of Philadelphiaâs immigrant and refugee history. We demand development without displacement.â
Gentrification is a very real issue that erases the livelihoods of immigrant communities. Though this article is from 2019, it highlights an important fight against gentrification in our beloved city.

Black and Asian solidarity against racism in the United States can be traced back over a century and a half. Come discuss how this shared history shapes AAPIs' role in Black Lives Matter at our first Chai Chat of the semester next Tuesday:
"'Asian Americans owe so much of their presence in this country to the Black struggle for freedom â from birthright citizenship to the ability to tell our stories in education and the culture to the civil rights we enjoy,' says Jeff Chang, the author of We Gonâ Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation. 'We want to be on the right side of history, and that side is squarely in fighting against anti-Black racism.'â

What forms of media are Asians commonly seen in? In what forms of media have we yet to gain representation? Share your thoughts at Chai Chat this Friday!
"'I have a habit of getting on a subway train to see the demographics of the train, and I donât see this reflected on our stages, where weâre supposed to be so imaginative,' Mia Katigbak, the co-founder and artistic producing director of the National Asian American Theater Company, said in a phone interview."

National Asian American Theater Partners With Regional Companies The initiative, with New York Theater Workshop, Soho Rep and others, aims to foster inclusion of Asian-American theater artists, technicians and administrators.
Awkwafina has quickly become one of the most recognizable Asians in Hollywood. Come discuss what her career means for Asian representation with us at our Chai Chat this Friday!
"How much can Asian American representation really mean in the big picture, when celebrating a face that looks like our own comes at the expense of other marginalized groups? Who else are we siloing into stereotypes as we, as Asian Americans, seek to break free of our own?"

Awkwafina's Past Makes Her a Complicated Icon of Asian American Representation The rapper-turned-actress' career is a case study of how an oversimplified view of representation can fall short.
Parasite, an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, is one of several examples of Asian representation in media we'll be discussing at our Chai Chat this Friday!
"Through earning this status and popularity, âParasiteâ has helped Asians in entertainment to gain visibility and add another dimension to a rather monolithic view of our community. The film proved that Asians can be brilliant actors, we can be creative and within different Asian societies, there is class diversity."
https://nextshark.com/parasite-hollywood-misconceptions/
How 'Parasite' Smashed Hollywoodâs Misconceptions About Asians and Foreign Films Koreans are plastered with plastic surgery, theyâre manufactured and they lack originality.
