Just some thoughts around mother's day...
Motherhood on mother's day “Mother’s Day is a day of celebration–it is also a day of contemplation.” -Kitsi (Kathryn) Watterson It is easy to gloss over the challenges and feelings of loss that motherhood brings. As we create our new identity of “mother” we find it is a messy mix of emotions and realities. So, we ...

Today at 11! I'll be here at this great program. For babies in their first year.
Bright Beginnings
Drop in. No Registration required.
Here’s an interview I did for an online magazine, Bold Journey. They provided the questions, I answered them in writing. The theme is FINDING YOUR PURPOSE. Thank you for reading.
+ I planned Baby Wordplay from my living room couch (or more often from the couch of friends!) and it seemed as if each chemo and radiation treatment breathed life into the dream. It certainly was a welcome distraction. I opened Little Theater in 2013, the first of three brick-and-mortar theaters-come-bookstores for babies and toddlers in Philadelphia.
Seven years later in 2020, the pandemic hit and I closed all three locations, the future unknown.
Gone were the critical face-to-face, cara-a-cara, interactions for young children. I lamented the sudden, wide acceptance of screen use for young children. It was, of course, understandable given the crisis, but I didn’t like it one bit.

Sharing my views, as promised
🌞
Everywhere I turn it seems, there are discussions, concerns and warnings about the negative effects of the digital age on children and adults.
🤩
Comment *Curious* for my full handout .
☕️ Begin by speaking about my own relationship to screens.
Although I created a mostly TV free home --we eventually bought one and kept it in a closet, bringing it out as you would a blender or a mixer.
Aaah, but I did not hesitate to get one of the early Apple computers for them, around 1988 when they were 6 and 4 years old.
🐣
I was a reluctant adopter of a cell phone and was the second-to-last of my friends to purchase one.
🐕
theaters were screen free.
Before storytimes each instructor recited:
“We ask you to keep your phones off and out of sight as much as possible.
Remember that we are modeling for the little ones that what we are doing—reading and singing—is important and deserves our attention.”
Presently, I admit humbly to being very attached to my phone, and it has affected my sleep to be sure. (More later)
*CAVEAT Running a small business that needs a social media presence requires a nuanced analysis.
I’d like to believe that if I did not run Baby Wordplay, I would spend a lot less time on my phone.🤷♀️
💫 This topic/issue/challenge is coming up a great deal as I speak to parents and grandparents and caregivers.
It's important and I have a lot to say.
💫 Stay tuned 😎

Elder wisdom or behind the times? Screens and young children. That’s what is on my mind. I am writing an essay to help organize my thoughts on this touchy subject.Where I started: I consider myself a wise elder. A grandma with lots of relevant experiences and considered opinions. Will young parents listen to what I have to say?Wher...
Back in Philly and it is SPRING! Indeed, everything is blooming most recklessly. 😍
Finally... new blog post!
Purpose, Meaning and Passion I was interviewed by an online magazine, Bold Journey. I answered a series of questions in writing. I had some choice in the questions through a pulldown menu. This type of interview, by the way, suits my "public speaking" anxious-self perfectly. I can sing and read aloud comfortably to an audience....
Janet's podcast episode on traveling with babies is so helpful. Of course I would include 😁

In 1899 African American inventor, William H. Richardson, patented an improvement on the baby carriage. Good thing for us!
Being able to spin it around depending upon the circumstances was brilliant 👏🏾.
