Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, grains, and other tubers – are a popular food staple found throughout Africa. 

Traditional meals feature a variety of tubers that are baked, boiled, or mashed and served with vegetables, stews, and sauces.

Cassava, sweet potato, taro, and yam are eaten throughout the African diaspora. We'll share an Oldways guide for cooking them all!

Join guest curator Doriana Diaz and artists from the exhibit at the closing celebration! Enjoy hands-on arts activities related to the exhibit, relevant library materials available for browsing, and an assortment of sweet and savory tastings in the spacious Skyline Room. Seats are limited for this event and pre-registration is required.

The tastings will include inspired dishes of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora dishes such as Black Eyed Pea fritters , Rice & Callaloo, Fried Plantains, Carolina Gold Bbq Chicken sandwiches, Southern classic desserts such as Banana Pudding, and Pineapple Upside Down cake.

We're revisiting bell hooks’ Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery while cooks us more delicious sweet potatoes. Register at bit.ly/WorkSweet and join us on Wed, 4/24 @ 6 p.m.

We will focus on Chapter 3, Work Makes Life Sweet, and explore whether our work is in alignment or conflict with our self-recovery. "Right Livelihood... embodies self-expression, commitment, mindfulness, and conscious choice."
