We welcomed more than 50 UO students to the 2022 Portland Internship Experience orientation last week. Next week they will start their summer internship at 47 small businesses and nonprofits throughout the region, where they will work on projects that make a difference in the community.

The Portland Internship Experience is a summer program that connects UO undergraduate students with a small business, non-profit or community organization. Students receive a philanthropically funded stipend, while spending 10 weeks gaining career experience and professional mentorship. After a successful launch, it will be back for year two with 60 students at nearly 50 sites.

Today we are excited to announce the launch of The Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health at the University of Oregon, made possible by a gift of more than $425 million from Connie and Steve Ballmer. This wide-reaching, collaborative effort will address the growing crisis in children’s behavioral health.

The Portland-based institute is at the center of a first-of-its-kind, wide-reaching effort to address the growing crisis in children’s behavioral health. It builds on the UO’s legacy of excellence in psychology and prevention science, and establishes a new national model for behavioral and mental health care by uniting the UO’s top-ranked research programs, Oregon public schools and families, and community support groups.

Melinda Chan worked at , a non-profit that provides supplies, tools and resources for students and teachers at underserved schools in the Portland region. Skyler Forman created his own clothing brand, while learning how to a retail shop at . We are excited that both have signed up to work with a UO intern again this summer. Interested? Join us in welcoming Kat, the Marketing and Development Intern this summer. She is passionate about social justice and the need for criminal justice reform.

From a small town in Kentucky, Kat is currently a student at the University of Oregon. She is studying political science, history, and German, and hopes to go to law school in the future. In her spare time, Kat enjoys hiking, reading, and figure skating.
