The Seattle Police Department remembers and honors Detective Harry W. Vosper who died on this day in 1949. Detective Vosper had just gone off-duty when a call came in of a man trying to shoot his wife. Multiple SPD officers and Vosper responded to the home where the suspect was holed-up in a basement bedroom. Tear gas was thrown into the basement. When the armed suspect came out, Det Vosper was shot by the suspect when he stepped between the suspect and another officer. Vosper was survived by his wife.

The Seattle Police Department remembers and honors Officer James C. Brizendine, who died on this day in 1955. Officer Brizendine was responding to reports of a prowler in a woman’s backyard when a neighbor raised his shotgun upon seeing the Officer's shadow. Brizendine reportedly yelled “Don’t shoot! I’m the police!” but it was too late. Brizendine was shot twice and killed. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.

Seattle Night Out 2024 is August 6th!

Night Out is a national event promoted in Seattle, by Seattle Police Department Crime Prevention. It is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, and unite our communities.

We are so excited about the upcoming Seattle Police Department Community Service Officer (CSO) Unit Football Combine! 🏈🥳

This brand-new event takes place Saturday, July 20, at the Genesee Park and Playfield, and is free for high school athletes aged 17 – 19. Similar to the CSO Unit Basketball Combine held in April, this event offers Seattle youth the opportunity to perform drills and scrimmage while being observed by a variety of college coaches and recruiters.

The CSO Football Combine was awarded funding during our most recent grant process, which focused on grants that build relationships between the community and SPD. We cannot wait to stand on the sidelines and watch this event come to life!

The Seattle Police Department remembers and honors Officer Amos J. Comer who died on this day in 1924. When a call came in that a man was causing a disturbance at the Business Men’s Club on S. Jackson Street, Officer Comer responded. He searched inside the business for a man matching the suspect description provided by witnesses but didn’t locate him. Comer was standing on the sidewalk outside when the suspect came out of the club and shot the officer twice, killing him. Comer was survived by his wife and four children.

The Seattle Police Department remembers and honors Officer Henry L. Harris, who died on this day in 1911. Officer Harris was working an overtime shift in Occidental Park where 2,000 people were celebrating Independence Day when a man suddenly approached him and shot him once, below his right ear, killing him. Harris was the third SPD officer murdered while on-duty in less than five months that year. No one was ever arrested, despite dozens of witnesses.

From 2018 to 2022, there were 2,228 traffic crash fatalities during the Fourth of July holiday period.
- 1,414 of those fatalities were a driver.
- 39% (545) of those drivers were drunk.
- The 21-34 age group had the highest percent (50%) of drunk drivers

The Seattle Police Department remembers and honors Officer Enoch E. Breece, who died on this day in 1902. Officer Breece was sent to a Fremont home where a woman was being held hostage by a fugitive member of the Butch Cassidy Gang. That suspect shot Breece twice, killing him instantly. He was survived by his wife and three children.

DRIVE SOBER - JULY 4TH - AND EVERY DAY

In 2022, 487 people died in traffic crashes during the Fourth of July holiday period.
- 40% (196) of those fatalities occurred in drunk driving crashes. - Of those who died in drunk driving crashes, 27% were in a crash involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration at or above .15 g/dL — almost twice the legal limit in almost every state.

July is Vehicle Theft Prevention Month and the Seattle Police Department wants you to be vigilant! According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 1 million drivers fall victim to this costly crime each year. In 2023, there was a 25 percent increase in vehicle thefts over previous years. Remember: Take your keys with you, close your windows and doors, lock the car and park in well-lit areas, and NEVER leave valuables inside!

The Seattle Police Department remembers and honors Officer James H. St. Delore and Officer James M. Forbes, who died on this day in 1974. Officer Delore was the pilot of Air 3, the SPD’s Bell 47 helicopter. On June 21, he and Officer Forbes were on-board Air 3, responding to a disturbance call involving a weapon on 37th Ave S. While circling overhead, Air 3 collided with a Cessna preparing to land at Boeing Field. Both officers were killed, as were both occupants of the Cessna. Officer Delore was survived by his wife and two children. Officer Forbes was survived by his wife and three children.

His fearless service and unwavering dedication to public safety exemplified the highest ideals of our professions. His passing leaves a profound void in our hearts and in our community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fellow firefighters as we come together to honor his legacy of bravery and service.

The Seattle Police Department remembers and honors Officer William H. Cunliffe, who died on this day in 1911. Officer Cunliffe was shot while walking a beat near Summit Avenue and Columbia Street in response to a rash of burglaries in the area where cash, jewelry and clothing had been stolen. A doctor who lived nearby tried to save Cunliffe, but he died at City Hospital. Cunliffe was survived by his wife and 2-month old daughter.

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time to stand together against abuse, mistreatment and neglect of our elderly family members, friends and neighbors. As many as 1 in 10 older Americans are abused or neglected each year and only 1 in 14 cases of elder abuse ever come to the attention of authorities.

The Seattle Police Department remembers and honors Officer Alexandra “Lexi” Harris who died on this day in 2021. Officer Harris had just finished her SPD shift and was driving home when she witnessed a multi-vehicle collision on southbound I-5 in Seattle. Harris, who was known to friends and family as “Lexi”, had exited her personal vehicle to offer help to collision victims and Washington State Patrol Troopers when she was struck and killed by a motorist. Officer Harris died at the scene. She is survived by her fiancé and his two children.

Now is the time to get a better understanding of online threats and to take action to be safer and more secure when online! June is National Internet Safety Month. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency says you can take four steps to be safer online including using multi-factor authentication, strong passwords, thinking before you click and making sure your software is updated!
