The origins of Juneteenth date to June 1865. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and the Confederate army surrendered to the Union army in April 1865, enslaved people in Texas — the westernmost Confederate state — could not exercise their freedom until June 19, 1865. On that date, Union General Gordon Granger led some 2,000 Union troops, many of whom were Black, into Galveston Bay, where they announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” deriving its name from combining “June” and “nineteenth.”

As we age, our bodies get slower and experience more pain. Motion is the lotion that can ease the aging process. Even a 30-minute walk can make a big difference in your energy level, brain function, and feel-good endorphins, making your day even brighter with or without the sun shining.

May 17th is World Baking Day. The world of baking is endless! Cookies, brownies, pies, bread... There is no limit to what you can experiment with. The occurrence aims to encourage people to start baking. Why? Because people who cook at home usually have a healthier diet and are less likely to develop obesity or type 2 diabetes. When cooking, you're also a part of the meal process from start to finish, which is highly satisfying and makes you feel more in tune with the food you're putting in your system. Baking your own products is also more fun and a great way to spend time with relatives and loved ones.
There are some exciting new facts about self care, exercise and more. Research has shown that moving 30 minutes a day, even in 10 minute increments, helps with mood, appetite suppression, energy and more. Can you carve out three 10 minute brisk walks every day? If you're having knee, hip, foot or ankle pain, come see one of our trained physical therapists and learn how a few visits can get you "back on your feet" in no time!
Traditionally, women are the caregivers for the young and aging populations, sometimes simultaneously. If you fall into one or both of these caregiving categories, be sure to take time for yourself and ask for help. There are many ways to get the help you need from state funded programs to your church family, from neighbors to coworkers. Asking is the first step, then wait for the answer "I would be happy to help". You may be surprised with those in your circle of influence willing to lend a hand.
Stronger, Faster, Better! Debbie came to IRG PT with hip and back pain. She completed 9 visits and her commitment to home exercises, walking and exploring the city really paid off. Congrats Debbie on graduating from PT!
