The Belonging in the Outdoors initiative identified a model accessible trail as one of 17 actionable steps toward making the outdoors in NCW more accessible and welcoming to all. The Chelan Douglas Land Trust is currently developing a conceptual design plan for an accessible trail at the Saddle Rock Natural Area and they need your feedback. Your input is crucial in shaping this trail to ensure it meets the needs of all community members. ⏰ Follow the link below to learn more about the project and share your thoughts by August 16, 2024!

🔥 EDITED to include more wildfire & smoke related resources.

is underway and TREAD would like to take a moment to thank the nearly 22,000 firefighters currently working to fight fires in our own backyard and across the nation.

According to Your Northwest Forests 14 large wildfires are currently burning on national forest lands in the Pacific Northwest. "Lack of precipitation, higher than normal temperatures, and dry lighting, as well as human-caused fire starts, have all contributed to an unusually large number of wildfires" and additional fires expected. "Smoke is and will continue to impact air quality in the region for the foreseeable future."

Stay up to date on wildfire status and plan your trips around smoke conditions with these resources. Have a resource to add? Include it in a comment below.

As temperatures soar and dry conditions persist, it’s crucial to be mindful and use caution when you head outdoors. This includes being aware of your vehicle. Fire danger is Very High and firefighting resources are already spread thin across the PNW. Let’s all do our part to prevent fires.
--

Have you checked your vehicle? Before heading this weekend, check your vehicles and trailers for these common issues that could spark a wildfire. Any spark in these dry conditions could cause a wildfire. Make memories, not fires this weekend.

Shoofly Fire - July 8, 2024

Firefighters are responding to a new incident located on the Wenatchee River Ranger District, on the southeast slope of Shoofly Mountain. The Shoofly Fire is estimated to be around 40 acres in size and is roughly 25 miles west of Lake Wenatchee, WA.

Air and ground firefighting resources are implementing a full suppression strategy to control the fire as efficiently and safely as possible.

Top Lake and Heather Lake Trails, accessed via Forest Service Road 6701 off of Rainy Creek Road, are currently threatened. The Pacific Crest Trail is not currently threatened but is about 2 miles west of the fire.

Recreationists are asked to avoid this area to allow firefighters to work safely.

07/04/2024

Happy fourth! Just a reminder that fireworks are illegal not only on public lands, but in Chelan County and many areas in Douglas County as well. Play it safe this Independence Day and focus on friends, family and fun. Leave the fireworks to professionals (there is a great show in Wenatchee) and leave your fireworks at home.

Don't let fire spoil your Fourth of July. While fireworks might be pretty to watch, please remember that they are prohibited on the Forest. Even a spark could result in a wildland fire that threatens the well-being of humans, wildlife, natural resources, and property. Stay safe and leave fireworks and pyrotechnics properly stored at home where they belong.

For more information about prohibited and restricted activities on the Forest, visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/list/wayne/alerts-notices/public-notices?ss=110914&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=FSEPRD1008274&navid=120000000000000&pnavid=null&position=Notices*&ttype=list&pname=Wayne%20National%20Forest%20-%20Alerts%20amp;%20Closures.

Good reminder from Northwest Motorcycle Association that applies to us all regardless of how we enjoy the outdoors.

"Outdoor recreation and the use of public lands is a valuable right that should not be taken for granted. By being dedicated stewards of the trails and lands we enjoy, we can help preserve access to public lands for future generations. This week, we will highlight various ways that you can become better riders and stewards for our sport."

THIS WEEK, WE BRING YOU A 5-DAY SERIES ON STEWARDSHIP

Outdoor recreation and the use of public lands is a valuable right that should not be taken for granted. By being dedicated stewards of the trails and lands we enjoy, we can help preserve access to public lands for future generations. This week, we will highlight various ways that you can become better riders and stewards for our sport.

Stewardship is important to NMA President Marc Toenyan “because I love the feelings experienced while recreating outdoors. My favorite outdoor activity is riding a dirt bike in the woods and mountains. You can explore so many places on a single ride! I also enjoy fishing, hunting, and hiking. When we take the time to care for the lands we recreate on, we minimize our impact on the resources we appreciate. This helps ensure kiddos can experience these things as they grow and then pass along to their little ones. I’ll never forget my father’s words when we’d be packing up after a weekend of camping and riding. He’d say, ‘leave it better than we found it’. That’s like paying it forward...to all the things that exist in our state’s natural settings “

Save the date! The Washington State Trails Coalition biennial conference is coming to Wenatchee October 3-5. National Get Outdoors Day AND Free Fishing Weekend means FREE access to day-use sites in the U.S. Forest Service - Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest on Saturday, June 8 and FREE fishing for certain species on June 8-9!
---

Forest Service day-use sites in Oregon and Washington will be open to the public free of charge on Saturday, June 8th, in celebration of National Get Outdoors Day. By waiving fees on this day, we hope to encourage people to take advantage of the many recreational opportunities available in their national forests.

The fee waiver applies to day-use fees at trailheads, picnic areas, visitor centers, and other recreation sites. Keep in mind though, fees for camping, cabin rentals, or special permits, will remain in effect.

This works out well for Washington State residents as June 8th and 9th is Free Fishing Weekend, when fishing licenses are not required to fish for certain species in Washington. So, while your out enjoying free day-use sites in the national forest you can also enjoy free fishing. Be sure to check the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife website (https://wdfw.wa.gov/) for more information about free fishing weekend.

Also, June 1st through the 9th is National Fishing and Boating Week. When recreating on the water, be sure to wear the appropriate safety floatation device and dress correctly for the air and water temperatures. Remember, most rivers and streams are running high with spring melt-off, be aware of fast currents, and the water is very cold.

We urge visitors to plan their adventure carefully by checking their local forest or public land websites for specific information on recreation opportunities, trails, safety guidelines, and any additional regulations.
