🌱🧡🐟🧡🌱 Improving salmon habitat must include caring for what's in and out of the water, and this year 4,532 streamside plants were planted as part of Cascade Fisheries salmon habitat restoration efforts!

Native vegetation is critical to stream health, trees and shrubs increase water quality by reducing erosion and keeping water shaded & temperatures low, and provide food and shelter for both land and aquatic critters.

We need your help to continue and expand our habitat & community engagement programs! 100% of your gifts directly support our work to recover salmon throughout NCW - link to donate early here: https://www.wagives.org/organization/cascadefisheries

Please consider helping us reach our fundraising goal either through donations or by liking and sharing our posts between now and May 8th!

Salmon are currently making their way up the Columbia River, and we are so thankful that one of the ways we get to welcome our amazing (and tired!) finned friends home is with more and more miles of restored river habitat!

This year, 10.9 miles of previously blocked habitat were opened up with Cascade Fisheries projects! Our restoration & barrier removal and correction work allows for natural processes that increase spawning and rearing habitat while preventing high-flow damage to private & public lands and stream crossings.

We need your help to continue and expand our habitat & community engagement programs! 100% of your gifts directly support our work to recover salmon throughout NCW - link to donate: https://www.wagives.org/organization/cascadefisheries , campaign runs now until May 8th

There’s a good feeling we get when we show up for others, especially when it's for those we all care about and rely on for so much.

And it’s not just about good-feels — volunteering or donating money to support salmon recovery helps everyone in the community and guarantees healthy watersheds for all. Great things happen for everyone when you give what you can.

Please consider helping us reach our fundraising goal either through donations or by liking and sharing our posts between now and May 8th!

Thank you, for creating this opportunity for WA nonprofits!

We protect what we love, and after this weekend's field experience, Wenatchee School District 246 students loved their time spent making amazing memories and deep connections within the Wenatchee watershed! Animal tracks, habitat, and hands-on pelt explorations, testing snow depth (both with probes and going face first 😊), looking out for tree snow "avalanches", nonstop snow snacking, and roasting hotdogs over a charcoal snow fire pit left everyone with ear to ear smiles and thankful for the beautiful places we live near!

Through the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office and Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) Outdoor Learning Grant, these students and others from schools around participate in salmon recovery education & watershed stewardship all year-round in publicly accessible destinations. Grant funding provided staff time and covered transportation & food costs for students. Thank you Cascadia Conservation District for coordinating the outing and to Mission View Elementary School Wenatchee School District After School Program and Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission for your partnership in making this field experience possible! 🧡🐟❄️

Barriers to fish migration keep our native fishes from accessing habitat needed for spawning and survival. Correcting or removing undersized, clogged, and collapsed culverts opens up miles of instream habitat for our finned friends. For private and public landowners, these types of projects also protect homes and transportation infrastructure and keep rivers safe!

These recently completed projects show before and after of barrier corrections on private property along North Star creek, a tributary of the Nespelem River. We work with landowners to improve salmon habitat, to secure funding, and implement projects that benefit people and fish. Thank you to our funders through the Family Forest Fish Passage Program Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office Washington State Department of Natural Resources Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife for making this possible!

Congratulations to our Coordinated Resource Management (CRM) team for winning this year’s Golden Salmon Award! Each year, one of our restoration sponsors uses this special award to recognize their ‘Salmon Recovery Partner of the Year’.
The CRM team is a partnership between Cascade Fisheries, Cascadia Conservation District, and Trout Unlimited's Wenatchee-Entiat Beaver Project, that is dedicated to restoring a network of healthy streams for our native fish populations. This year, the CRM worked on various streams throughout the Wenatchee and Entiat watersheds to restore in-stream habitat, plant riparian vegetation, and remove fish passage barriers. This was our greatest project year yet, and we can’t wait to apply these efforts to more streams in the future!
Interested in giving back to the fish you love through the fundraising campaign? All donations to our efforts in salmon recovery efforts will be matched 1:1 by our partners the Icicle Fund up to $5000 - link in our bio or visit https://cfncw.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/grant?grant_id=69373

🐟 HABITAT RESTORATION FROM 300 ft! Cascade Fisheries and Chelan County Government Natural Resource Department met to capture a bird's-eye view of one of our salmon habitat reconnection projects! CCNRD staff piloted a drone flying 300 feet above the ground in a grid pattern over the project site. The resulting imagery shown here are many individual photos stitched together. Use of drones can also capture ground surface elevation data as a way for us to easily and cost effectively monitor the function and effectiveness of our projects over time. A huge thank you to CCNRD for making this happen!

STUDENTS SAVING SALMON! Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office and Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) have announced the award of $3.7 million in grants to provide thousands of Washington’s students with outdoor learning experiences and Cascade Fisheries and partners kicked off our Project: WOW (Watching Over the Watershed) program earlier this week with Wenatchee School District 246 Mission View Elementary School
Lion's Den after school students!

Through this funding, Cascade Fisheries has partnered with Chelan Douglas Land Trust to connect elementary through high school students to the recovery of imperiled salmon and steelhead on the last remaining intact floodplain on the lower . This week, students worked hard on floodplain restoration planting and teamed up with Cascadia Conservation District to set up trail cameras through their recently funded Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife Watchable Wildlife program

We are incredibly excited to continue this work and other educational experiences over the next two years and deeply honored to be grantees among so many amazing projects statewide! Thank you to Derby Canyon Natives for our locally raised native plants, to our funders and project partners for their support, and to our top notch student salmon-saving squad ❤️

Goose Creek Fish Passage and Wood Restoration Project Complete!

Our second project of the summer on USFS lands in the Wenatchee Basin was completed on September 1st. The Goose Creek project restored access to 0.75 miles of habitat for ESA-listed spring chinook, steelhead, and bull trout, as well as many other native fish species, by replacing two culverts that were 100% impassible to fish with much larger culverts. The newly installed culverts had a natural streambed built inside of them and are 100% passable to all species and life stages of our native fish.

Additionally, Cascade Fisheries worked with staff from Cascadia Conservation District and Trout Unlimited's Wenatchee-Entiat Beaver Project to add wood to 0.4 miles of Goose Creek. The wood was added using only hand-held tools such as chainsaws and grip hoists, not to mention a whole lot of elbow grease! In all 11 new log jams were added to Goose Creek which will provide habitat for our native fish and improve the natural processes of Goose Creek, helping to sustain good habitat over time.

A big thank you to:
Our project partners at the U.S. Forest Service - Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest
Our construction contractor Kysar & Koistinen Inc.
and project funders the Bonneville Power Administration, the HCP Tributary Committees, and the U.S. Forest Service.
