Last week our Early Childhood Foundations students took a field trip to Wichita State University Child Development Center touring their classrooms and completing an Environmental Checklist assignment. Get more out of learning with in person experiences to match reality with the teaching fundamentals.
The students were too engaged for a group selfie this time but we can't wait to see what adventures they go on in the future.
How many times this year have you said or heard the phrase “It Is What It Is” when things don’t go in your favor?
I personally have said this line multiple times over the last few years but 2024 has taught me that I have the control of the outcome of my life too not just fate, karma or any other outside power you can think of.
Just look at the movie Chicken Run (2000) and the story of a flock of chickens that are raised for Ms. Tweedy’s Pot Pie farm with a very short life expectancy as soon as they are large enough, they move onto the plant when most of the chickens on the farm accept their fate of the inevitable.
Our leading chicken Ginger however doesn’t think this is a way for a chicken to live and she spends the whole story doing anything possible to breakout of the farm with several failed attempts with several returns to the drawing board.
I highly recommend watching this with your family and friends as a reminder that YOU are the narrator of your story at the end of the day. It’s up to YOU to have the drive to turn to the next chapter and keep going!
Happy Saturday Friends :)
I don't think homesickness and loneliness receives as much light while in school as it should. This isn't just for the student that has traveled out of city/state to join us at WSU this is for those that have a best friend or relationship that is separated by hundreds of miles.
These are the humans in our lives that we want to talk to and tell about our day, the crazy thing that happened on campus and sometimes vent about obstacles they faced . Talking on the phone or facetime may be great in the moment but it's not the same as meeting in person for coffee or wherever your favorite hangout spot is.
You are not alone. There are more of us on campus than you think. Some are a few hundred miles while others could be from a completely different country but the emotions all come from similar places.
Just know it's okay to need a low key day to process our feelings but don't forget to reach out if you need extra help through these big emotions please reach out.
WSU is here for you always 💕

About this year's keynote:
While we are still putting together the agenda and sessions (the CFP closes Wednesday), we are excited to share that our keynote speaker will be Dr. Meg Paceley (they/them) whose talk is titled, "Health, Activism, Community, and Resistance in an Era of Anti-LGBTQ+ Policy, Legislation, and Rhetoric."
Dr. Paceley is a social worker and scholar engaged in research that examines factors in the social environment (e.g. families, communities) and broader systems (e.g. policies, societal rhetoric) and their relationship to q***r and trans (QT) youth’s mental and physical health. They aim to identify and evaluate macro strategies (e.g. community organizing & activism, policy advocacy, education) to confront stigma, discrimination, and victimization that contribute to mental and physical health disparities among QT youth. With the goal of promoting social justice for QT youth, Dr. Paceley embeds their research in principles of anti-oppressive practice and theoretical frameworks such as social-ecological systems theory, minority stress theory, and critical theories. Their scholarship is rooted in more than five years of social work practice experience developing, leading, and evaluating a QT community-based organization; engaging in community organizing and advocacy to promote QT equity; and direct practice experience with QT youth.

We are happy to make the CONNECTion.
Custom graduation caps are one of the best WSU traditions and a wonderful way to celebrate Make a Hat Day (one day late).
It’s never too early to start dreaming about reaching the finish line of graduation no matter what year you are in.
Keep up the good work and remember that you are one step closer to that dream job. You got this!
Do you stress easy during the day of the things around you?
Even though it would be easier if we had complete control over everything unfortunately that isn’t very likely.
Focus on the things you can have direct control over and let that irritating experience at the store just roll right on by. You have better ways to use your energy 😊

Meet Reagan Olmstead of Derby, KS
She is a freshman in the Wichita State University Elementary Education Program with dreams of becoming a preschool teacher just like Ms. Honey from Matilda!
She first thought of becoming a teacher after volunteering through Americorps at Tanglewood Elementary in Derby. After just the first month she could see herself working with students forever. Expanding on this idea Reagan began to work for a daycare growing her love of working with the 2-4 year olds even further.
With her mom as her biggest cheerleader along the way she is continuing her education to become the best elementary teacher that she can be.
Way to go Reagan we are cheering you on every step of the way🥳🥳

We all have had good, bad and ugly days. Instead of sn*******ng the bad mood onto the next person you interact including the children that we interact with.

A wonderful resource for those of us with test anxiety. Slay that beast of a test and learn some techniques to help.
Here’s to the little bear all stuffed with fluff that continues to teach the big and small the importance of friendship, perseverance and mental health. If you haven’t read the original A.A Milne books I highly recommend you read these at home and in the classroom to show the kindness in the world.
